And starting him at PG never made sense and still doesn't. I don't understand Pitino's stubbornness on this. It's like trying to run your offense with your super athletic TE playing QB.

He will get worn down which will make him less effective as a scorer. Great secondary option as a facilitator, but this team needs his scoring.

He plays Coffey at the point because Richard demands it under the plausible threat of a grad transfer next year (and IW is up and down). He gives Murphy a very long leash to continue going one on three in B1G play because he's a senior when there might be better ball movement if he gave more minutes to an Oturo/Curry combination. Michael Hurt gets playing time (and texts) even though he doesn't shoot in order to keep the Matthew Hurt dream alive.

It seems highly unlikely that the current position assignments and substitution patterns will lead to a tournament berth. Pitino has to make some changes if he wants to keep his job.

I haven't heard this rumored anywhere, nor do I think it is a credible possibility (the grad transfer portion, everyone knows Richard can be overbearing/helicopter dad).

Elliot started that game FWIW (as did the rest of the srs including Shell)....after the start, Mo got almost all the center minutes and had a huge game. BK and Gaston played spot minutes bc it was a bad matchup for a less mobile defensive Big. And it's not like we had excess minutes to give after the game was decided - PSU won on a buzzer beating 3.

I love Coffey as a player and he is getting better. He is a fantastic finisher. That said he needs to get a whole lot better as a player without the ball. He does all of his damage going one on one or on the fast break. In the offense, he doesn't move without the ball well and he doesn't make the cuts to the basket to get open and get layups or spot up jumpers. He also doesn't get rebounds for a player of his size (3.1 per game) and he's not a real defensive stopper. He is definitely not a point guard, no question about that. He needs another year and it should be at the 2 or 3.

Yes! It reminds me of Mason's very first game vs. Hawaii when he thought Corey Sauter would make a good option quarterback. Yikes. When I watch this team I am reminded of a poster back in December who quite aptly said that these Gophers came from the Island of Misfit Toys. Each has a talent but none are complete players.

I agree, I would have put the ball in McBrayer's hands at the point. Coffey is not a point guard.

Pitino had to create a starting point guard out of someone because he was not ready to give the ball to IW. If he would have started IW at point from day one we would have a shoot first PG in IW. Now Pitino has trained IW to be a passer and play maker first and that is for the long term good of the team. That said- I think it is time for IW to start at the point.

McBrayer has been running the point more and more often. Early in the year it seemed to be in the 2nd half but the last couple of games I have noticed it earlier and earlier. That being said, our offense isn't really dependant on who initiates it- the point, 2, and 3 all basically do the same thing. Where having a point guard makes a difference is in pushing the ball upcourt to get an advantage before the defense can get set up. If you go back and look at Coffey's big games, most of his points come when IW is getting him the ball on the wing in transition and Amir can attack the rim. IW looks to make that initial pass up court better than Amir or Dupree.
That is why I agree with you about time to start IW- it helps the team get better at 2 positions. Dupree can step up and be the defensive stopper if you need and Gabe can come off the bench.

I don't like to play the "what if" game but if Marcus Carr were eligible, Amir would play the wing all the time and Richard Coffey would still be yelling at the point guard and Coach Pitino from the stands- but the Gophers would be better

It's time for some Jelly in the starting lineup. Live with the mistakes and the D deficiencies. He's the only one that had a clue or the ability to handle Illinois' pressure. Bring Gabe off the bench. He's a good player, has good head on his shoulders, it won't faze him.

Again posting my same opinion as before

I'd like to see them run some offense with Coffee playing more inside 3 at times along with playing the wing and let him try to create, score and dish as he gets the ball around the paint. Play some pick and roll once he has the ball. When he plays wing shoot that 18 ft'er more. They need to the run 2 man pick and roll with the low post with out rotating ball out to point first. He needs to get better with the right hand drive and be able to go both ways with fakes and moves not always trying to Jam on his drives. A pull up 5 ft shot is great also. I love his game though not bitchin just want to see improvement all around. Anyway it is an offensive option. If our offence stays the same probably need a new coach. The 4 other guys on the floor ---- Well... definitely need some help in recruiting -- It wouldn't HURT to have him. Just sayin
