The lawyer for suspended University of Minnesota basketball standout Reggie Lynch has summoned reporters to his Minneapolis office for a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday, shortly before they’re expected across town for a sexual misconduct appeal hearing.

For weeks, attorney Ryan Pacyga has repeatedly delayed the hearing dates for his client’s appeal. They hope to overturn a university investigator’s findings that Lynch was “responsible” for sexual misconduct involving two women nearly two years ago. The investigator has said Lynch should be suspended for one incident until August 2020 and expelled for the other.

Lynch could have accepted that decision or appealed. He appealed, requesting a hearing on each case before a three-person panel of the Student Sexual Misconduct Committee.

The hearings could have occurred a month ago, but Pacyga repeatedly pushed back the dates, saying he needed time to adequately prepare. At a news conference in January, he lashed out, saying his client’s due process rights were being violated and comparing his situation to that of people confined to Japanese internment camps.

On Wednesday, Pacyga declined to discuss the nature of Thursday’s scheduled news conference. However, bringing reporters and TV cameras to his downtown office two hours before he’s expected across town for a lengthy and intense hearing suggests a change of plans. If Pacyga and Lynch don’t attend the hearing, Lynch’s only option is to accept the expulsion and/or suspension.

Shocking, written by Rochelle Olson. You can feel the venom in her words. I guess she got promoted to columnist instead of reporter
 

Pacyga is going to be one angry guy in court trying to persuade people that Lynch was mistreated. Kind of unusual that he is calling a press conference before the hearing. Usually you do it afterwards if my recollection is correct.
 

My guess is Pacyga learned his lesson with the football team and he is angling this entire fiasco in a way that he can take the University to a legal court of law rather than a kangaroo court.
Lynch's playing days are over, but UMN is going to be hauled into a court of law where they become the defendant and Lynch becomes the accuser.
 

If that is the case then Reggie will have the chance to clear part of his name. VERY interesting if your right as that will create a giant scene with lots of discovery. Not only expensive but risky. Every texted message, every picture, witnesses . If he has done nothing it is worth anything to clear his name.
 


The word I'm hearing from credible people is that the news conference is being held because Lynch is dropping his appeal. He may even appear at Pacyga's presser.

He has zero chance to win any appeal in the present climate and needs to move on. Too bad he flamed out like this but hopefully he can get his life back in order and prepare for professional basketball opportunities this spring.

Its a matter of time before UM-TC or another school gets sued by a "respondent" but this is not that time.
 





Uh, is Rochelle Olson really describing her drug use and how great it is?

The appeal process may be under scrutiny. Pacyga is peeling the onion layers.

The appeal is dropped, is this case over?

Things are really screwed up at the U under the auspices of the EOAA(?). The U lawyers don't have subpoena powers.

The purpose of the conference is to air the unfairness of the process at the U?

He did not answer questions as to whether they want to pursue Reggie's case legally or otherwise.

Most GopherHolers understand by now it doesn't matter to you whether your uneducated opinions are right or wrong. Apparently it is enough for you just to be able to express them to a welcoming audience of similarly uneducated posters. Nobody can successfully bring a due process lawsuit if they refuse to go though the process. Reggie and Pacyga will not be suing the U for anything. We know this because none of Pacyga's clients on the football team sued the U for anything. We all should know by now that Pacyga will sue anyone at the drop of a hat except when he thinks he is going to lose. For the time being the U is going to remain undefeated in defending Title IX due process lawsuits.

While the reporters were waiting, the camera was rolling. Caught discussion of one of the reporters new baby, another reporters wedding plan and Rochelle Olson saying Heroin and Nicotine are basically the same, and a fentanyl high is "the best 3 minutes" of your life
 

Lawsuits cost money and time neither of which Reggie has the luxury off. The truth is one of the victims.

Nothing will ever change at the U. Why is the U's legal counsel not tied into the EOAA legal process?

Have you ever had to hire a lawyer? It is expensive and the cost keeps going and going through the appeals. If you think the process isn't fair anyway, and you're going to graduate and play pro basketball anyway (apparently someone said he has the credits to graduate) I can totally understand why he'd drop it.
 

Like Pacyga said, a zero sum situation. Cut your loses and move on. Look ahead learn from this, and live a good life.

He can win a prolonged legal battle, win in court and still lose the war. I know of a former colleague who went through a lawsuit who won his case but ended up with a huge legal bill with most of the settlement going to the attorneys.

Such a frustrating situation. everyone involved gets hurt and the university suffers when a parent describes the environment at the U in a negative light.
