Fighting Irish lose 21 games in one day!

That’s the definition of slap on the wrist.

Okay, I just read the little bit in the link...the $5,000 fine is silly. That is definitely a slap on the wrist. But vacating 21 wins because two guys cheated on schoolwork is over the top.
North Carolina, the school itself, had sham courses set up to keep players eligible. The NCCA concluded no penalties were warranted.

But two or four or a couple guys on their own cheat and 21 wins are vacated by the NCAA???? That's a school issue, a player issue, not an NCAA vacate 21 wins issue. That's wrong.
And I respect Notre Dame but it's far down my list of teams I'd root for...not sure who they'd have to play for me to cheer for Notre Dame.

The NCAA should just make a rule that says if your name is Alabama, Florida State, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, etc you are allowed to cheat. There will be a punishment publicly, but understand it is just a slap on the wrist.

I don't know if I'd lump PSU in the cheating category. Possibly guilty of not doing enough to stop a Pedophile, but I don't know if they broke NCAA violations.

North Carolina and Miami? Over the top and yet just a slap on the wrist.

The important thing is that they nail ND.... but lay off NC ... because entirely fake classes are apparently not a big deal...

It is good to know someone else got Gangelhoffed.

I guess I'm a little surprised Notre Dame is as upset as they are about the penalty. I mean, I get they don't want to vacate wins, but on the same sense, there's no postseason ban, a fine they'll have to make change to pay, and probation. I get the the fact it doesn't jive with precedent, but it's also not like it really affects the program.

That said, if there is no proof that the trainer was being paid to do this or that the staff had knowledge he was doing this, I guess I don't get why the NCAA is insisting on vacating the wins. I mean, it sounds like the athletes were talking to the trainer and just said they needed help on their stuff and the trainer offered to do it for them, not like Gangelhoff where she was getting paid by Clem on the side.

I'm sure something like that happens at every school every day. I know I might have "referenced" a few buddies' papers when I did my homework...

Not sure the other 100 or so kids that weren't doing that should be punished based on that...

Though Brian Kelly comes off as a jerk when he says it doesn't concern him. I'd love the NCAA to just hammer them with a lack of institutional control death penalty just based on that statement.

Of course, that university could also fall off the face of the earth and I'd be just fine with it...

I think Notre Dame's ire is that if they hadn't suspended the kids involved, the NCAA never would have known about it. So, some kids cheated. They got caught. Were punished. And the NCAA swoops in and tells them to vacate wins. Essentially they got punished for doing the right thing.

The reaction of the school becomes a little more clear in this (but still, shut up and be glad it wasn't more).

Bingo.

They feel like they did the right thing after finding out about a bad thing... and they got nailed because of it. While Penn St... UNC... did everything wrong, but were arguably better off because of it.
