When is the last time Minnesota hired it's first choice for a football or basketball coach? Fleck gives Coyle a lot of credit for wanting to come here. Coyle connected and sold him. Who is the last AD Minnesota has had that is better than Coyle?

It takes a President and an AD to lure and hire a coach like this. They both deserve credit. From my knowledge Bruininks was terrible and Teague was awful and Maturi was nothing special. It takes a commitment from the President and skill from the AD to get a coach like Fleck. I credit Kaler for the commitment to major sports at the U and Coyle for the skills to land a coach like Fleck. The national media has had nothing but praise for this hire.

You can bag on Coyle non stop for 3 weeks, but I haven't seen an AD make anywhere near as lauded a hire since maybe Lou Holtz? Credit to Coyle, and yes, even Kaler.

So you're an ends justify the means kinda guy? Shocking.

If Maturi or Mega Tongue could spend $3.5 mil per year on a FB coach, they would have hired a stud too.

I agree that Coyle and Kaler should get credit on this hire. As for ends justifying means... that's generally not me. But here is the way I see it:

In the past there has been fan base bitching about the administartions lack of support for football. We've carped about no leadership in the athletic department. We've complained about the search committee format and the bureaucrats involved. We've complained that nobody ever seems to really wants to coach at Minnesota. We've bitched about lack of funding and lack of decisiveness.

So now we have Coyle, who was faced with a crummy, no-win situation. You can disagree with the fallout on the sex "scandal" thing. But he made a decisiive decision, acted quickly, and moved forward. he implemented his plan (yes he obviously had one), got the U to pony up big $, and he hired his #1 choice. This was completed in less than a week.

He has my respect for all of this. Leadership sometimes means pissing people off.

I think the question isn't whether they had the authorization to pay that much, but whether they had the ability to draw someone who was worth that much. Is Fleck our coach if either of them are the AD? I doubt it.

I give credit to Coyle for getting Fleck. That said, what former AD had $3.5MM per year, a nearly new stadium and a $160MM athletics facility to help his cause? He has more assets in his corner than any U of M AD in history. Coyle still majorly bungled the EOAA situation and the way he cut TC loose was unprofessional and unnecessary. He crushed a good man under his heel. Let's see how Coyle does with the people side and leadership aspects going forward. If he can perform admirably in those areas going forward, he could win my support. But he's got a lot to prove.

This x1000.

I give the guy credit. In San Diego he looked like a rat on a sinking ship. Guy had a plan all along.
You don't put that package together in what, 72 hours? and not have your sh-t together.I'm even more impressed when you consider the majority in this State were ready boil him in oil.

Seems to be a good hire. I'd still love to see this slimball fired.

Some day and Crosby worshipping snakes.

That seems appropriate.

Does Coyle strike you as the kind of guy who walks into a room and "sells" anything? Does he impress you?

Fleck was just being polite. He looked at the situation, the $$, the returning roster, the location, the facilities, and decided this would be his best P5 offer. He made the decision carefully. I'm sure Coyle had very little to do with it. Although, as others have said, I'm damn glad he got it done...

No, it was an easy decision for PJF because this is his dream job. He has always wanted to coach the U of M. He said so.

I absolutely think the question is whether they had the authorization to pay that much, plus pay the asst coaches as much as Fleck is promising. Plus having a $160 million facility set to open next year.

I bag on Maturi and Mega Tongue as much as the next guy but Coyle didn't get that stadium built, didn't get those facilities built...he is standing on shoulders taking bows for stuff he didn't have anything to do with. He is a scum bag.

Glad he got his man and hope Fleck does well...but Fleck isn't coming to the U if Claeys hadn't stepped into a touch situation and built on Kill's work and none of them would have anything if Kill hadn't turned our swamp into at least something that resembled a football team.

Coyle took every opportunity to bash on Claeys and Kills work and never once has he talked about all the work, all the giving and fundraising, all the good people that put him in a position to be offer to get his first choice, to pay him over twice what any football coach has ever made at MN and walk into a winning situation (even with the the off the field stuff).

Nor has Coyle or Kaler taken any responsibility for any of the issues even though they happened on their watch same as Claeys. And in some cases, much more on their watch than Claeys when it comes to the player boycott and turmoil.

Coyle and Kaler are scum and cowards and are taking bows for the hard work of many that came before and that really isn't in the tradition of the people of Minnesota and I fully hope they get punished for it when the time is right.

I think all Coyle had to do was not drop his pants in that meeting and Fleck would be our head coach.

I think people are underselling Coyle. The guy has experience. I truly think he played the Claeys situation to get a new coach. Coyle will be much different going forward.

Coyle could have fired TC any time he wanted to without cause or reason. The idea that this destructive and embarrassing situation is in any way, shape or form a benefit to the U is idiotic. If Coyle wanted Fleck, then all he had to do was fire Claeys after the Wisconsin game, have Sawvell coach the bowl game and hire Fleck a week later. That is what brave, honest, decent and successful ADs do. Coyle instead felt the need to bash the last 6 years and a lot of good and decent coaches and players who helped get us back from the Brewster disaster, helped us get our new facilities rolling and put us in a position to be attractive to a top coach.

I don't think Fleck was taking any job before he did. He didn't want to take anything away from Cotton Bowl. I'm sure Coyle was told to call after Cotton Bowl.

Coyle bashed the last season and that's it.

It isn't over twice as much. Kill was making $2.5M when he "retired".

As I stated in another thread, I still feel like I need to take a shower every time after I hear him speak.

This. 100%. MC and EK have a lot to prove and many fences to mend.

The timing of hiring Fleck had no issue with firing Claeys. We fired Brewster mid-season and hired Kill in January. Kill got to coach (and lose) his bowl game too.

I think we see a much more vocal and active Coyle after this. This is good for the program. But, it means his silence for the last few months was intentional. That's too bad, and I feel bad for Claeys and his staff. They were done wrong.

That said, he's our AD right now, and I agree with PJF when he says it's gonna take positivity from the media and fans to get this thing rowing in the right direction.

Row-U-Mah baby!

I am positive...positive that Coyle is an untrustworthy piece of dog crap. Doesn't mean I can't root for the Gophers, just means after every victory I got to take a shower to wash the Coyle scum off my body because he will get rewarded for being in the right place at the right time where even his incompetence couldn't prevent a good thing from happening.

Coyle may well have saved his own skin with the hire of Fleck, but my opinion of Kaler hasn't changed one bit.

Feel bad for Claeys and staff, but some passion for this program left with Kill. That's who we wanted. Claeys was an extended interim coach.

Not everyone gets to be a winner at this level.

Agree with all of this. Seems to be a good hire, but doesn't change the fact that Coyle is slime
