Total Apathy

Coyle set his expectations incredibly high with his big game comments. He will eat thise words and fire whoever he hires within 5 years for not winning those games. They gave Claeys no support and he beat who he was supposed to beat and was getting closer on the others then just pulled the plug without giving the guy the support or a chance. How the heck do you expect a guy to win those games that soon?. How do you expect him to recruit without a long term deal?. They handcuffed him from the beginning and didnt care.

You nailed it. Coyle was using Claeys as a bridge until a new coach he wanted was available. Good or bad for the program long term, he was committed to his agenda at all cost.

Coyle and Kaler didn't handle this situation all that well, but if you guys have been listening to Mason on Barreiro, one of his strongest points in this whole mess is the need for stability. The U has gone through Presidents and Athletic Directors at a rate much faster than your average major university over the past couple of decades and that lack of stability filters down through the whole school, including the athletic department. What this place needs now is a five years of the stability so we can see how things play out instead of starting a new round of higher-ups needing "their guy" in place below them. What we will probably get instead is an activist Board of Regents, a hyperactive Legislature, various offices within the University, and a persnickety media stirring the pot and keeping the place in chaos.

I am more depressed than ever. How do you bring stability to a dysfunctional family? Every four or five years, there is a big ugly public family argument.

Why can't they help the football program that generate the most revenue for all the non-revenue sports instead of attacking it in almost witch hunt fashion?

Furthermore, everyone seems culpable of one thing or another. This reminds me of a hoarder's house. There are a few dead cats and rats in the heaps of trash. Where do you start the cleaning process? Condemn the whole house. Tear it down or burn it down and then start all over from scratch.

They need to revamp everything starting with the current President & AD and including the re-structuring of the extra-judicial process which means replacing a whole bunch of people and starting from scratch. Thrown in the BOR and the PC police in that pile. Dysfunctional U is an understatement.

Finally, how they handled the wrestling team differently with different outcomes compared to the 10 football players (they are not all saints and some deserve expulsions) is raising the fair question of racism.

We have not even begun to talk about how many lawsuits are forthcoming.

Start digging in folks. There is a million-year storm brewing in the horizon.

I'll respond with the standard issue "you must be fun at parties."

But I think the problem starts with us, not as individuals but as a state. We've become a bunch of meddlers and the University seems to be a target of all kinds of meddling. Because we meddle, we don't seem to be a place where a lot of top talent seems to want to end up. I'm not saying that the University should be exempt from scrutiny or run by an absolute tyrant, but if that place is ever going to be truly excellent (and as a grad of one of the grad schools, I can say that it is pretty darn good), we have to let the place right itself to some extent.

That does it!

Okay okay. I'll quit whining, sober up and start rowing the boat and be as physically fit as Souhan.

Welcome PJ Fleck.

Goooo Gooooophers!

The bandwagon just got new shocks installed. Climb aboard!

Don't understand the moaning here. It's a big boy move and I'm excited we've decided to pony up.

Big boy move? "Big boys" don't wait for a sexual assault witchhunt to make a move at HC. A "big boy" move would have been firing Claeys after the WI game.

Either way, I'm glad they ponied up and got the guy they wanted.

For all we know, Coyle had been talking to Fleck's agent for weeks. Maybe one of the terms was that he wanted to finish the bowl game.
If we fire Claeys after WI and then radio silence for three weeks... this fanbase would have gone thermonuclear.
Every single indication was that Fleck was our first choice. The timing makes sense to me.

This football program has gone through a meat grinder the past few weeks. Feeling like a breakfast sausage is a natural reaction.

There undoubtably will be more grinding before this thing is done.

At some point fans will reach an "In Fleck We Trust" point or not. Certainly reached that point for me with Coach Kill but not quite with Coach Claeys.

Don't know squat about the new hire but will give him a chance. As for the UM as an institution, my jury's still out...

Well, another way to look at it is, they needed to wait until after the bowls. Maybe they were content with Claeys until the right guy became available / was on the line? Maybe Claeys wouldn’t have been fired until then? In the end, maybe the boycott issue was irrelevant?

I still don’t understand the whining in here. “Apathetic” seems like the opposite of how I’d describe this move. In hindsight, it looks to me to be decisive, methodical, and ambitions. I suppose this might confuse some, because it’s very un-U-like.

For what it’s worth, I was critical of Claeys being let go – I would have supported keeping him. However, I’m ready to move on and I really like this hire.

If Coyle wanted Claeys gone and waited around until the noose got knotted to pull the trigger, he was flat-out disingenuous and that's never good. On the other hand, if he had fired Claeys after Wisconsin, we would have had all this time on our hands waiting around for bowl season, which would have led to the inevitable 47-person search committee that would have had to include representation from the left-handed janitors' union and wouldn't have that been a joy to watch. It all makes me torn about Coyle; he may be evil and a genius.
