Doogie: Still believe that the 2017 starting QB isn't currently on the roster.

So here is my question: If this guy is wide open to the field recruiting wise with limited offers and he is the number one rated JC QB, and we are telling our #2 guy we don't need him because he can't run, and our next two guys in line are questionable in the eyes of the coaches, and our waterbug 5th guy is little and can't pass, so coaches are saying he's a wide receiver if he can catch... WHY, would we slow play this guy and not offer him a scholarship? We obviously need another guy to compete for the job. Why let other schools get the inside track? Anybody wants to feel wanted...don't tell him, show him! It's December! You should have a dang decision made before this what you are doing with your quarterback situation. You can't enter the spring season with just two viable candidates. Makes no sense to me how they are handling the QB situation.

Johnson was just there on Monday to work him out. He played his games this year while we were playing ours. It sounds to me like we needed to see more to be convinced. We’re not the only ones. In his interview with Doogie he said he has an offer from New Mexico but he’s hearing from Ole Miss, Utah and Hawaii, in addition to Minnesota. Everyone is still evaluating their needs and his services.

You say, “… we are telling our #2 guy we don't need him because he can't run, and our next two guys in line are questionable in the eyes of the coaches, and our waterbug 5th guy is little and can't pass, so coaches are saying he's a wide receiver if he can catch …” But we don’t know if the coaches are actually saying any of that. Maybe they want to be convinced this guy is better than what we already have.

Perhaps unlike some schools, we're not big on revoking scholarships late if we see someone else we like at another position and want to use that?

I mean I like to think we wouldn't do that....

Please don't take this personal, I'm not attacking u on that level, but perhaps this is our problem. This line of thinking is way too "Minnesota Nice." If a better player wants to come here we should take that player. If it means another kid's offer gets pulled so be it. That's life. Life is hard sometimes. I understand some fans will not like that, but if u r not willing to take those steps then the only place u will ever compete on a regular basis with Wisky, OSU and Michigan and Iowa is on the gridiron in your dreams. We can't keep taking knives to gun fights unless we r willing to accept being mediocre or we drop out of the B1G ten to another level that plays "Minnesota Nice."

You're assuming this guy is better, I'm not.

As for the general practice being a dick because it gets you ahead is wrong either way.

I'm not assuming anything about this particular player, just talking about the practice in general.

As for it being a dick move, I'm not disagreeing with that either, but we can't compete with the other dicks if we aren't willing to play on their level, unless the occasional upset win every decade against them is acceptable to everyone. If that is how the majority wants it to be then I don't understand why there is so much negativity and upset folks on this board. Everyone should be thrilled where we r now.

You think that practice would make a difference between Ws and Ls?

This is like complaining about how Claey's doesn't seem excited enough or something. Makes no sense...

For all we know we're already doing it.

Better would be nice...but in December with Juco signing date a couple weeks away...I think even almost equal would be a good idea? You gotta have 3 viable candidates in spring ball. Right now we have two.
And which part aren't they saying? They took the scholarship away from #2. They have said they are looking at moving #5 to WR... I can see he can't pass and they are telling us. And they are looking and talking about about JC QB's...how much more do you do need to connect the dots on how they feel about our two best candidates?

U r right, we may already be doing it. My only point is that if we r NOT doing it, we should be, if we want to compete year in and year out on the elite level that some here want us to be on.

Do you think that pratice gets us wins?

What are you yelling at me for? You wondered why they haven't offered the guy and I tried to tell you. You're shooting at the messenger.

As for #5, based on what I've read on this board it sounds like he asked to move to WR, not that the coaches want him there. But what do I know.

They didn't take the scholarship away from Rhoda. Rhoda was a walk-on who was awarded a scholarship, those are almost always on a year-to-year basis. Rhoda was a walk-on, he didn't have a scholarship to count on. He likely only got a scholarship because one was available that we couldn't use.

That isn't being harsh. That's how this works for a lot of walk-ons. They are not on scholarship, but if one opens up after signing period (super common), they give it to a walk-on. Now, if a program is going to get called out for using those scholarships for the year, they wouldn't use the scholarships.

Not worried about the harshness. I get how it works. Worried about having three viable QB's on the roster. Claeys also said in not renewing the Rhoda scholarship they wanted dual threat QB's and Rhoda just didn't fit. So, why would Rhoda stay if the coach is telling him he won't play? If you are suggesting he had that option? that he had a choice? If he really had a choice why have the discussion with him in the middle of the season after he starts the Maryland game and wins? He's not going anywhere until after the season. Had you not made that decision and announced it...does Rhoda come in for Mitch somewhere after the 2nd or 3rd or 4th interception versus Wisconsin? His strength was passing. Instead Mitch goes out and won't pass the ball fearing his 5th interception and we punt...

Unfortunately, Rhoda's strength was that he knew the playbook and wouldn't hurt us.

Of course Rhoda had the option to stay. He came to the program as a walk-on and they certainly would have welcomed him back with open arms. Claeys spoke with him because it was the right thing to do. He knew Rhoda was graduating (could go anywhere and play immediately) and he knew Rhoda was highly unlikely to play much next year, so Claeys did the right thing and let him know.

No, I don't think Rhoda would have came in regardless of the situation (barring an injury). I don't think the decision to not play Rhoda had anything to do with him leaving the program.

There are multiple things that go in to getting u wins, and yes I believe that is one of the practices that will help u get wins. IF there was a high quality player who wanted to come here last minute and we didn't take him because of the issue we r discussing, we should quit trying to compete with the upper half of this league and be satisfied beating Wisky once every 15 or so years.

As stated on podcast Tuesday: QB Zaire is on the #Gophers radar, and his girlfriend goes to the U. But no sense yet he's interested in them.

From Doogie tweet.

We often have a few spots left....

I pretty much agree with all that. Just wish we seemed to have a better plan to replace him if that's the decision.

Yeah, I think that's why we are bringing in a JuCo. At a minimum, we need the depth. If the guy comes to campus and Seth Green emerges as the better player, good. If not, we have our starter.

Virginia Tech has a 1st year JC who led them to 9-3 this year and division title
Memphis is 8-4 with JC
Auburn has a JC who did not win the job
Indiana is bowl eligible with a JC
Iowa State used a So JC transfer this year with the new coach
Utah is 8-4 with JC QB this year
Kentucky is 7-5 with JC QB this year

Those were 2016 top JC QB's. Some went to lesser schools

So you're saying all the QB's but VT's led their teams to mediocre seasons? Well, by GH standards anyway.

Maybe you should be asking yourself why he is still wide open to the field and why after working him out we too (like everyone else) are hesitant to offer him. Your entire rant is based in the assumption the kid is good. Not sure why you are assuming that?

Yes, but for the most part the teams made a bowl. That's something we need to continue to do. If Green starts and we miss a bowl, Claeys is likely gone. If he can find someone better and win 8, the program is still moving in right direction

I also heard that they are real high on Green.

Just based on observation and their created situation the Gophers have two legit quarterback candidates for spring practice imo. Having three seems to be a common sense need. On tape this guy appears to me to be at the level of the two we have. 1000% he can pass better than Williams and he is bigger. So, given very limited options between now and early January to get a quarterback enrolled it just makes sense to me to pursue this guy harder than we are.

Maybe he has red flags? Maybe we got better options? I just think they need another quarterback for spring practice and he is the top rated JC guy and available. You can look at his limited offers as an indictment or as an opportunity.

Many here would see this as the reason for the poor play calling and clock management.
One could argue, that they could use it, to help with creativity in the offense(ahh, remember the jet sweep?...). Besides, it's 2016... The whole "Everyone who uses green is a flake" thing, as a way of thinking, is so 1985. Lol.

I think it is hard to be creative when you are craving nachos constantly but who knows.

We should be in the mix. How many times has Wisconsin does this?

I think the only grad transfer UW has ever taken was Russ Wilson, but I'm not entirely sure. He's the only one I remember, anyway.

I don't know if there's any truth to UW even being involved. Chryst recruited him out of high school so there's some familiarity there. Will be interesting to see where he ends up. I've heard he's a great kid and think he'd be an upgrade over Hornibrook.

Danny O'Brien. He stunk. But he did the same thing.
