We're floundering in the second half, can't protect the QB, sideline reporter suggests Leidner's left shoulder may be hurt. Ignoramus that I am, I'm sitting on my couch at home, thinking "what can we do to compensate for an inability to protect our quarterback?" I'm thinking screen passes, quick sideline passes, get creative with the running game.

But instead we keep Leidner dropping back and chucking the ball downfield, over and over.

Am I wrong to think that this loss is largely the result of offensive playcalling?

Recruiting. Apparently the pay sites that keep telling us we have great recruits aren't materializing with Ws in rivalry games.
 

It was not play calling. It was unforced errors, like dropped footballs, forced throws into double coverage, and a missed sack on Houston in the third quarter that had most to do with it. Not like Wisconsin was beating the line with play calls or anything like that to, it was individual breakdowns about not being able to pick up the blitz off the edge, or a guard or a tackle just getting blown by off the snap of the football. I wanted a toss sweep and a field goal on that fade route in the second half, because I did not trust Leidner. He has shown a tendency to throw a flat football on a fade, or to flat to the corner and he stairs down the route. This makes it to easy for the safety. That drive needed points and what could not happen, happened.

This loss wasn't all on Leidner but his unforced errors in the second half let everything else snowball and put the whole team in a big predicament. After Celetstin caused that fumbled football, the Gophers still had a chance. With a QB that was still playing with confidence they could have pulled this one out and really should have had a shot because the defense made a play. As it was, the offense stalled out, it started with forcing that throw to Carter after the first down conversion on the crossing route. To many people getting to close together on those crossing routes, the picks are not working. It was 17-17 with 8 minutes left in the football game and the Gophers had the ball nearing midfield. They should have had belief they could put points on the board there.

What has Carter ever done that you force him the football on a crossing route or on a third down play? To many individual breakdowns and mistakes, I actually thought for the most part Johnson called a good football game. This game became such a letdown because the Gophers let the Badgers off the hook.

Think about the dropped td to woli. Then the drooped pass to carter down the sideline. Both very well thrown balls by Mitch. If these plays are made by the receiver things are different.

Gophs have severely lacked at both qb and wr for decades.

It's a crying shame that such good players on this team are continuously failed by coaches who can't find a better leader and a QB who utterly fails his team when the chips are on the line. I can't say how happy I am that ML is gone and I wouldn't pay one cent to travel to a bowl game where he's leading the team.

The receivers are generally equally culpable as the qb. Just no threat at wr provides the opposition defense with a real advantage.

I agree, our receivers suck. And we've known that for years. MAC teams have better receivers than we do. Of course, who wanted to come here and have Mitch sail it over their head?
 

Don't bother complaining about the QB. Aim all the critism at the S and C coach and the offénsive line coach. I have followed Minnesota since 1966, haven't missed many games. That offensive line performance tonight set Gopher football back 40 years. Absolutely ridiculous. No drive, missed assignments, poor technique. Yardage gained was because of the running backs, not offensive line blocking.

If we are assigning blame, I say= Leidner 35%, Johnson 35%, Claeys 30%. Johnson draws up the offense, and coaches the players in how to execute the offense. Claeys is the head coach, and has ultimate responsibility for the team's performance.

If you try something, and it doesn't work, don't keep doing it. This coaching staff seems unable to deviate from the game plan when things are going bad.

I was wondering if we were watching a Gophers offensive line or the Vikings current OL. YeGads, that was bad.

Not being able to adjust, or deviate from the game plan when things are going bad is why I now have resigned myself to wanting this staff gone. The Gophers players deserve better, it is time for new leadership for the Gophers. I was against changing staffs before, but I am now convince this is the plateau or the best this staff can achieve. No sense in waiting until after the bowl game. If a coaching change happens, it needs to happen right away. I hope AD Coyle has a coach and staff already lined up. The Gophers need a more inspiring leader.

No, you're 100% accurate. No second half zone reads, no outside runs, not one screen pass.

How many games do you have to watch as the play caller to realize any completed pass is playing with house money? Run the ball! Do something innovative...a bubble screen, run the read option and keep it sometime after the first drive, throw a screen pass at right time, throw the dang ball to Rodney Smith...he can catch and he can gain yards after the catch, put Brooks and Rodney in the backfield together and create some deception, etc etc There are a million things to put our guys in position to succeed. Instead we create the situation to have him so scared he won't pass the ball to anybody because it'll be his 5th interception of the half. That's not on Mitch imo. We know who Mitch is in 2016...don't keep dropping him back to pass and encourage him to look around...it's not going to work. Second half play calling lost all four games.
 

I know I should know this, but I do not.

Is Tyler Johnson injured? Why is Eric Carter playing so much? Are Register, Gentry, and Holland dead?

I know Gentry has been injured for months or years, but I am really curious to know if Johnson is injured? He certainly proved he belonged out there, despite a few drops this year. He certainly would have been a good candidate for some sweeps and reverses today and last week if healthy.

Well said. The coaching staff seems to have way too much confidence in Mitch. A good staff would come up with a game plan that limits Mitch's ability to make mistakes not accentuate it! Have Smith and Brooks ever once been in the backfield together? Have we ever done any wildcat? Did we attempt more than 5 screen passes all year? Nope, let's just keeping throwing into double coverage and hope for the best...
