Mona: asks about fishing tournament.
TC: had a great time. connected with a lot of people. Do it again next year.

Sid: DB transfer?
TC: he'll be able to help us. recruited him in HS. looked for a grad transfer at Safety. got some talented young kids. he'll buy us some time (for young kids to develop). It's a great fit. big, physical kid. fills a need to give us depth in secondary and special teams.

Sid: any other walk-ons?
TC: no. pretty much set on roster. upperclassmen start workouts tomorrow. new kids start following Monday.

Mona: status of FB in Canada?
TC: we spot-recruit Canada. check out film. don't have a designated recruiter. more schools playing American rules. some of the film from top row of bleachers.
had more kids attend camp. going to turn into another avenue as FB there gets better.

Sid: what can players do now?
TC: lifting and conditioning 8 hours a week. FB staff can take up to 2 hrs. we get back after 4th of July, coaches will start working on teams - how to attack - put those things in.

Sid: everybody going to be healthy?
TC: Start practice Aug 5th. we'll have everyone healthy at that time. key to get summer conditioning done without getting anyone hurt. challenge for Coach Klein and his staff.

Mona: how much time would you like before HS kids report to college?
TC: wish they could have a couple weeks. some graduate and fly out next day. do a good job of monitoring kids.

Sid: recruiting - committed?
TC: not sure how many. got a few commits from in-state. we're about where we need to be. look for 15 to 20 commits. go through summer - 300 kids on campus today for camps. heavy evaluate kids in midwest - satellite camps - through June 12th. we feel like we'll get more commits. 15 to 17 scholarships open. think it's going well.

Sid: how can kids get in camps?
TC: all done on line. e-mail FB office for info. we've offered a lot of kids coming out of camps, or gone after preferred walk-ons. great opportunity for our staff. got to fit into what we do on offense and defense. lot of other college FB coaches here today. If it doesn't work out at U of M, get a chance at another school.

TC: coachclaeysfootballcamp.com

Sid: position changes?
TC: Ryan (Santoso) said he wants to be the punter. takes a lot of time to do both, Ryan doesn't think he can do both. feels punting is his best thing. he'll get opportunity to play in NFL. great move for our FB team. we have qualified people for place-kicking.

Sid: Murray's certificate.

That is a very interesting statement...

Also didn't realize that coaches from other colleges he also. I thought it was strictly a U thing. Thanks for a great report, that I know for sure.

Thanks, SON.

We had a satellite camp here in St. Johns, AZ. Only portable toilets were invited. But we found 3 keepers.

QUESTION FOR THE NEXT SPORTS HUDDLE:

Do Coach Claeys & the Gophers coaching staff ever considered holding in-state satellite camps like in Fargo, Duluth, or Mankato (after the Vikings move their training camp)?

My thinking is that they may get good outstate players that they may not have the opportunity to evaluate. Players that could not come to the normal camps at TCF Bank stadium.

I know there is probably logistics & rental costs, etc... But, I think it will be really cool if they can bring the camps closer to kids far away from the cities.

Fargo, Duluth, and Mankato are too far from the TC?

Now this was pretty funny.

Hungan doesn't go very far from home. It's a big world out there.

Anytime you go to Fargo, you can push your car all the way there. It is pretty d@rn flat once you get up close.

Thanks Dr.Don - It is great to hear that you are now scouting for the Gophers in Arizona. Who knows more about satellite toilets than you?

I know for sure he can tell you everything about what you will find inside the toilets.

It is interesting for many reasons...

That is a very interesting statement...

#1 Ryan often kicks off deep out of the end zone or high and deep in the corner, eliminating half the field for a poor return in theory. Is the replacement able to do that?
#2 Ryan can make 50 yard plus field goals seem kinda easy. Can the new guy do the same?
#3 Tracy seemed to want Ryan to be the punter last year too...

I would think he had/has an excellent chance to be an NFL field goal kicker because of his strong leg. He must be even more impressive in practice as a punter!?

Interesting statement...

Kicking and reason for concern? You bet.
It doesn't seem long ago that we were watching Dan Orseske boom a 60 yard punt followed by a 26 and 22 yarder.
I hope it works out.
