Tony Granato's deal:
Granato and Tsipis [Badger women's basketball coach] each received five-year contracts that will provide for base salaries of $400,000 for each year, with each receiving considerable additional compensation from the UW Foundation.
Granato will receive an additional $100,000 the first year, with that amount increasing by $25,000 each year up to $200,000 for the fifth year. That would bring his total compensation to $500,000 this season up to $600,000 by the fifth year.
Granato’s predecessor, Mike Eaves, was paid a base salary of $259,605 in his 14th and final season as UW coach.
Granato’s deal is believed to make him the highest-paid coach in college hockey. According to an NCAA Division I Revenue and Expenses Report two years ago, the median salary of the 10 highest paid men’s hockey coaches was $373,000.
Granato’s contract also includes considerable incentive to remain at UW. If he leaves the program to take another job in the first two years, he could have to pay a buyout of $2 million. That number drops to $1.5 million the next two years and $1 million in the fifth year.
My favorite slacker stipulation:
Granato’s contract also stipulates he must complete his bachelor’s degree requirements within one year.
Barry took care of the assistants:
Newly hired associate head coaches Don Granato and Mark Osiecki will make $200,000 each in the first year of their three-year contracts. They will both receive annual raises of $25,000 for the remainder of their contacts.
Others (who needed not) applying for the job:
According to the open records request, 13 others applied for the job, including former NHL defenseman and current Lindenwood (Mo.) coach Rick Zombo and UW-Stevens Point coach Chris Brooks
