Tracy Claeys appeared on the Sports Huddle at his usual 10:30 a.m. time slot and Dave Mona returned to the weekly show after having the day off last Sunday.

1) Sid said he had talked to Mitch Leidner and according to Sid, Mitch Leidner expects to be available for the second half of spring ball:

Claeys replied, “Power of positive thinking is a good thing.” He added a decision as to whether or not he participates in spring drills is up to the medical staff - “Not sure for spring just yet.”

2) Sid asked about the newly signed players that reported in January and if he’s impressed with their abilities:

“The kids that came in who will help right away (Juco players) Garrison Wright and Vincent Calhoun . . . (they have) good feet and over three hundred pounds – road grader type blocking.” Claeys responded to Sid’s query. He also hastened to add redshirt freshman Nick Connelly’s name as one who has worked hard and has looked good in off-season workouts.

On the defensive side of the ball, Claeys mentioned Juco defensive lineman Merrick Jackson who he expects to make an immediate impact on the defensive front.

3) Sid asked what the coaches can do as far as coaching in the off-season:

Claeys said they’re limited in what they can do. They can only work with individual players and not as a team. Their primary focus when they’re instructing/coaching a player is fundamentals and footwork.

The biggest emphasis in the off-season, according to coach Claeys, is strength and conditioning . . . “want the kids stronger . . . body mass.”

4) Dave Mona said he had been talking an individual who said that each week the name of Seth Green is raised but seldom is Demry Croft mentioned. So Dave asked Claeys to talk about Demry Croft’s ability as a quarterback:

“Demry has size and height to extend the play . . . Demry is highly competitive . . . (I) feel good about our quarterbacks . . . exciting competition (this spring) between Seth and Demry,” Claeys replied. Claeys sounded not only positive about the potential of Seth Green and Demry Croft, but one could hear his excitement and that he is looking forward to spring drills and the competition between the two young quarterbacks.

He also mentioned freshman quarterback from Jackson, Alabama, Mark Williams. Williams will arrive on campus in June, participate in summer workouts, and will practice when fall camp arrives in August.

5) Sid asked about Chris Streveler and his move to the receiving corps:

Claeys answered, “Chris is going to graduate this spring . . . (spring ball is about) position chart as opposed to depth chart . . . (We’ll) work hard to help him find a role.” His role, apparently, would in the receiving corps.

6) Sid said he was impressed with the new coaches (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson and offensive line coach Bart Miller) and he thinks they will help in recruiting:

Claeys sounded very positive when he briefly talked about the new coaches. “They’re honest, genuine people.” He said the duo helped in getting the last couple recruits in this year’s class.

He closed the question saying, “All of our attention is on spring ball . . . recruiting, looking at 2017 (recruits).

7) Dave Mona asked if any of the team’s walk-ons have received scholarships:

“This semester, Adekunle Avinde from Blaine and Conor Rhoda . . . we’ll see going into fall camp.” A name mentioned that’s related to his final comment is Blake Cashman.

The importance of a solid walk-on program in practices, “Walk-ons help you win games!”

8) Dave Mona asked Claeys if he thought Peter Mortell will make it in the NFL:

Claeys positively answered, “He’ll definitely have a chance . . . They (NFL) like consistency . . . He’s been consistent with us!”

9) Sid asked if anymore scholarships have been awarded:

“Not that I know,” Claeys replied.

Since Signing Day, Claeys said he gave the coaches time off to be with their families.

And once again, he said their focus is now on spring ball. After spring ball they’ll be discussing where they need help. So it’s possible that they could offer an unsigned player; however, it didn’t sound with any certainty that that will be the case.

10) Dave Mona asked the final question, which was related to open practices during spring drills:

Claeys said the first four practices will be closed to the public; however, the fifth practice will be opened to spectators.

After spring break, when they resume drills, Tuesdays will be closed practices, but Saturdays will be open to the public.

Go Gophers!!

DL again thank you. Listening to it requires skills beyond those of most humans. Question 7 and then the Number 9.

Thanks, really appreciate it.

Really hope these three step in and have good years.

My favorite thing on Gopherhole - The DL update.

Always a joy to see that you have posted. Super thanks!

Thanks, guys. I appreciate your kind comments; I'm glad you enjoy the recaps.

I'm sure it's difficult to come up with topics, questions and news during the off-season. Prior to Jerry Kill, the coaches would give a final report after the last game and then would appear on the Sports Huddle to give a report on recruiting related to the National Signing Day - signed Letters of Intent. They didn't appear on the show again until a report or two, if that, during spring drills and at the start of the football season. Now Gopher football is discussed every Sunday for 52 weeks. So, IMO, we should be grateful that Gopher football is a weekly topic on the Sports Huddle. Purely conjecture on my part, I doubt Gopher football will be covered as it is now when Sid Hartman is no longer at the radio station, and I suspect the same could be said for Dave Mona, if he decides to leave the radio show at some time in the future. It takes commitment to do the Sunday show every week.

And the same could be said for me. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the Sports Huddle and writing the recaps. But I will be 69 next month and I've entered my autumn years. No complaints here! I plan to continue this weekly report for the foreseeable future and as long as it's fun. But there are things that I want and should do with my wife and family, things that I've put off doing. I sincerely appreciate my wife's patience as I commit our Sundays to writing this report.

Until next week . . .

Go Gophers!!

As someone who lives out of state, DL's reports are a terrific way to keep up with Gopher FB developments. Thanks so much, DL. Much appreciated.

I wonder if with his speed Streveler could get some work fielding punts and kickoffs?

If you heard the Claeys inteview, he said they will spend spring practice "trying to find a fit for Steveler" in the offense. But, Claeys also said that, if they could not find a fit for Steveler, then they would have to "sit down and talk about" his options.

In other words, when spring practice is over, if they don't think Steveler is going to play a role in the offense, it may be "thanks for everything, good to know you" time. Steveler is due to graduate, so he could potentially move down the road and open up a scholarship.

He's a real good athlete, I think they can find a role for him, maybe on special teams.

I am impressed that Streveler is graduating in three years, quite the accomplishment in an era where five is the norm for non athletes

Maybe but I doubt it. If Steveler is smart which appears to be the case, he will use his remaining scholarship to pursue an advanced degree.

I think SON's point is that once Streveler graduates, Claeys won't offer him a scolly for his last two years of eligibility if there is no role for him.

DL, I enjoy reading and appreciate the recaps as much as everyone else on the board but if you are putting anything off from a family standpoint to write these recaps I would strongly recommend taking a few weeks off. :)

Especially now when there is little to anything of any substance offered until spring ball gets underway. But as long as you keep writing them I will continue to enjoy reading them.

He could, of course, pursue an advanced degree under scholarship somewhere else as a graduate transfer. That would be pretty smart too.

Any chance they will try to use Strevlar in a role similar to what Wisconsin used Tanner Mcevoy in? Not saying full time defense or offense, but it packages that might need both? Probably a silly question but you never know, he is a really fast guy and it would be nice to be able to utilize that speed.

If he can't hit the field let alone be assigned a definite position I can't see another D1 school taking him on.

Break Sid's record for oldest scribe!

I don't say it every week, but I read your recap every week and I want to thank you for picking up the laboring oar and letting us know what happens on the show. You are 100% correct that we won't get the same coverage if Sid ever chooses to die.

And I also want to extend a sincere (albeit early) very happy birthday.

Thanks DL! Your efforts are greatly appreciated from somebody 5000 miles away! Keep up the great work! And thanks to Mrs. DL as well.

Sure, but they have scholarships at non P5/non D1 schools too. My point is him graduating opens up options, it doesn't close them as the earlier post I replied to implied.

I know speed isn't everything, but with his you'd think they could find a spot for him, if he wasn't opposed to ANY positions. He may have a limit on what he's willing to play, i.e. tight-end, receiver. If they can't find a spot for him in one of those positions he may choose to move on. But man he's got some speed, which you'd think they could use, somewhere.

I would think a FBS school that features a running quarterback might jump at the chance to take him.
