per Jess Meyers:
So if someone else is behind the home bench at Mariucci next season, it would be hard to envision a coaching change precipitated by on-ice results. I am of the opinion that if Lucia is gone, it will be because he’s not offered an immediate extension that is of his liking, or he simply feels it’s time to walk away.
Some believe that would’ve happened two years ago, had the Gophers been able to beat Union in the 2014 NCAA title game. With his third national championship banner hanging – equaling the resume of Herb Brooks with the Gophers – it would’ve been a perfect “drop the mic” moment for Lucia.
The coach will be 58 in August. He’s a grandfather now. His youngest son, Mario, will be done with college hockey at Notre Dame when this season ends, and as a second-round draft pick of the Wild, may be working at Xcel Energy Center as soon as next fall. One can certainly envision a time when being a grandfather and a hockey dad will be more important than another four-hour bus ride to Madison on a winter Thursday afternoon. But those close to Lucia know his competitive fire still burns brightly, and the vision of raising a third NCAA title banner hasn’t left his head.
Lucia will give way to a new face and a new voice inside the Gophers locker room someday, maybe as soon as April. But if and when he does, it will be by his choice, and on his terms.
