How can the Texas Aggies replace their AD after only a few days and Minnesota still doesn't know what the hell it is doing after 6 months?

Whats a new AD going to do that is not currently being done. The plan always has been to wait until May or June.

It's really quite simple...they fully intend on hiring the existing interim AD. I'm guessing, though, that this is not what you want to hear.

I want the Gophers to hire an AD that that can move the program forward and successfully raise funds. Actually, I am all for hiring Beth Goetz and in fairness to her, the U needs to take care of business of get off the proverbial pot.

My original reason for posting this topic is to evaluate the difference in the approach of two programs that obviously value athletics and leadership quite differently.

The U just needs enough time to pass to say Beth has done a good job as an interim so they can hire her. I don't think the U is under any pressure to have a wide open search consistent with equal opportunity and affirmative action criteria met so just hire Beth and give her a few years.

That we haven't hired a new AD yet? Nope. Couldn't possibly care less.

We've seen nothing but excellence out of our 3 major sports over the past year, so there's no need for their boss to be hired in a timely fashion.

Wow, the president of A&M who was president at Washington from 2011-2015 hired the AD from Washington. C'mon Minnesota, what's the hold up?

AD hired tomorrow. What changes for men's basketball and hockey? Pitino and Lucia are going to try harder?

No, but the new AD could actually evaluate during the season whether these are the coaches he/she wants going forward. If a new AD was hired within a month or two of Teague's firing, a different decision may have also been made regarding football instead of promoting Claeys 'out of necessity'.

Why does everyone get so bent out of shape about this? How does it affect anything right now? I just don't get the angst.

This. Obviously they had something in the works. The Gophers were caught with Teague being a dork.

I agree...folks need to relax about this.

Why? What makes everyone so confident? Is it the amount of success and proven track record of our current coaches? Is it the stellar track record of the University of Minnesota's administration to hire the right people? Is it related to the amount of success Gopher sports have had over the past 50 years? Is it Kaler and his committee of brilliant minds that made a such great AD hire last time?

Okay I'll play along. It's because if one hasn't been hired, it means we haven't screwed up yet. Happy?

Claeys deserved a shot. It's a school friendly contract. Give him a chance to build on Kill's foundation or start from scratch and compete against a ton of other schools looking for a coach. If he fails, you're selling brand new facilities in a couple of years.

Hiring an AD now or two months ago or in April, no difference.

Why? Because it makes zero difference if an AD was hired last Oct or this Mar. Z-E-R-O as far as how the MBB or MH team do this year or how the FB team does next year. I know, doesn't fit your "the admin is the problem" agenda you have been on for months now, but I believe that is true.

If you're so convinced they're going to make the wrong hire, why in God's name would you want them to hurry and rush it??? I don't get it.

Maybe they already have someone and the person requested to wait until after the spring sports. Maybe they want to finish all the investigations to make sure Goetz is clean before promoting her. Maybe they feel like promoting Goetz immediately would have been looked at unfavorably and are just biding their time. Maybe they really do just want to do a thorough search. There's a million reasons to wait and no good ones to rush it.

Pretty sure they said outright that they didn't expect to hire anyone until springtime.

They are already six months behind of a new direction for the athletics program! That is six months of vision, six months of building relationships in order to raise money down the drain! The world we live in moves faster than the Gophers, the time is now to hire Goetz or move on, it's that simple!

This is correct, last I heard April was the target hire date. Sounds like they may want to see how some ADs handle their basketball programs. Makes sense, since it allows current ADs to leave respectfully and not in the middle of a potential tourney run.

Right. I understand taking 2-3 months to hire a new AD but that means someone would have been hired 2-3 months ago. 6-12 months is ridiculous. The investigation is just an excuse. An AD still needs to be hired, and it was not going to affect the new AD or any individual sports moving forward.

Kaler has never shown a sense of urgency to fill the position, and it's not just this position. What about Goetz's old position? What about Dan O'Brien's old position? If the Gophers want to be successful in athletics, hiring a new AD should have been Kaler's top priority, instead it was farther down the list. The administration continually shows that winning is not a priority here, and I think this is just another clear example.

A new AD may have made a different decision on Claeys. I hope he's the right guy, but what if the Gophers struggle again next year? There are many that think Pitino may not be the right guy, or that Lucia needs to go. Yet they had to promote Claeys and no other decisions will be made because there isn't an AD in place. Kaler dragging his feet on hiring a new AD may just prolong decisions that may need to be made now or a few months ago with Claeys. I also think if Goetz was the right person, or if she wants the job, she would have already been promoted. 6 months should be enough time to prove she can do the job.

This is just my opinion and a number of you disagree, that's fine. I'm just tired of losing, and tired of the Gophers administration seemingly being behind the curve on everything.

Wow... I'm completely impressed with our new Athletic Director. This guy nailed it at the press conference a couple of hours ago:

His speech starts in earnest at 5:27. He gets us, is passionate, and answered the questions perfectly.

Tim Brewster (a former Gophers coach) nailed the press conference when he was hired.

That said, nailing the press conference is never a bad thing and I hope he works out for you.

I couldn't imagine an AD not hiring Claeys. We all know that you want more and think Claeys should get fired even if he wins 8 games next season, but there isn't an AD in the country who would agree with you.
