STrib: Pitino says he sees "upward trajectory" of Minnesota's play in the Big Ten

The Gophers haven’t done much except lose lately, but coach Richard Pitino said on Friday that he sees improvement after a close loss vs. then-No. 1 Michigan State and a game that Minnesota mostly controlled at Penn State before falling apart in the final six minutes.

Of course, Pitino realizes that is not enough.

“I think you’re seeing an upward trajectory in the Big Ten of playing better,” he said. “But obviously we want to win.”

“For 34 minutes, when we stuck to the game plan [at Penn State], we were really good,” he said. “I mean, we were a really good team. You look at Michigan State. We played with them until the last two or three minutes. Ohio State, we had some good moments. At some point here, we’ll break through. Hopefully it will be Saturday.”

Have to stay positive of course, but we are playing 4 on 5 this season which makes it pretty tough to win even on the play yard pick up basketball, much less at this level. At least next year we'll have Lynch at 6'9" at the center, starting ahead of Konate and Gaston, which leaves Murphy at 6'6" for the 4. Sure would like to see us pick up a 6'10'/6'11" center for 2017.
 

"We were playing really good"(?)
Wouldn't that suggest we were beating the other team in all aspects? I am not sure how allowing the other team to shoot over 60% in the 2nd half constitutes "really good."

I can accept that the kids may be making steps at getting better, but I don't want hyperbole from the coach. Just be honest. We played better than Penn State for 34 minutes. That is an honest assessment. Really good.(?) That is not a truthful statement.

I just don't get the why people think Lynch is going to be a game changer, there is a reason that Tubby never offered, he just did not have B1G athleticism, nothing from the early season scrimmage seemed to indicate that this has changed. He's a decent role player that adds depth, not that different than what Eliason was.

Perhaps, but if we had a center of that caliber right now, he might be a bit of a game changer. You know, like maybe one who could catch the ball (and move toward the ball) when it was thrown to him; one who could pass out of a double team; quickly grab the rebound and make an outlet pass; or one that didn't consistently place himself directly underneath the basket.

Certainly didn't suggest Lynch would be a "game changer." I would hope Lynch has better hands and court awareness than Konate and Gaston.

This is what I was getting at with my first post. I know that coaches try to provide a positive spin, but Pitino is getting close to Brewster territory and that's frightening.
