Bart Miller New OL Coach - Video, Bio and More

There you have it! Good news for our O-Line.

It appears if true that we are getting a good OL coach familiar with B1G play.

Will be hearing the official announcement before the end of the week?

Does anybody hear any inkling as to who the new OC is going to be?

Do we like this hire? My OL Coach knowledge is lacking.

Here is his bio:

Coaching Experience
2014 - Florida Atlantic University (Assistant Coach/OL)
2013 - New Mexico State University (Assistant Coach/OL)
2012 - University of Wisconsin (Assistant Coach/OL)
2011 - University of Wisconsin (Quality Control/GA-OL)
2010 - New Mexico State University (Graduate Assistant - Offense)

At Florida Atlantic
Miller took over a 2014 line that returned just one every day starter. Miller's opening day line was left tackle Reggie Bain, a true freshman, left guard Mikingson Marsaille , one of squad's biggest players who had seen limited action the year before due to injury, senior Braden Lyons, a senior moving from right end to center, a position he had never played, redshirt-sophomore Dillion DeBoer, who had started the final six games of his freshman campaign, at right guard, and senior Eric Minemyer, who drew his first start after switching back and forth to tight end. By season's end, 11 guys had seen playing time, Bain earned freshman All-America honors by 247Sports.com, and true freshman Joe Gold had served as the center in seven games allowing Lyons to move back to his natural spot at right tackle. The unit better known as the "Atlantic Wall" blocked for 10 different ball carriers who amassed 1,962 yards, just shy of the program record setting 2012 campaign. Quarterback Jaquez Johnson threw for a career high 2,215 yards and 17 TDs. In the first season under Miller, the Owl quarterbacks were brought down 21 times in 806 opportunities. Holding opponents to just 21 sacks was a five year low.

At New Mexico State
Bart Miller created a new offensive system for the Aggies which yielded 34 points per game and an average of 300 yards per game while rushing for 180 yards per game through the squad's last five games. He took over a line that had allowed 45 sacks and improved that protection by more than half to just 20 in 400+ opportunities. The 2013 line averaged 23 knockdowns per game. His center was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List and two offensive linemen earned a spot on the All-Independent Team.

At Wisconsin
As the offensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin, Miller was named one of the Big Ten's Best Assistants in 2012 by ESPN.com, after taking over an offensive line in September that ranked 103 nationally in rushing averaging only 101 yards per game, and finished 12 in the nation, averaging 237.8 yards per game and 5.2 yards per rush. (265 yards per game in conference play). He helped guide the Badgers to their third-consecutive Big Ten Championship and earned a berth to their third- consecutive Rose Bowl.

The Wisconsin run game set the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 all-time single game rushing performances in school history (564 yards vs. Indiana, 542 yards vs. Nebraska, and 467 yards vs. Purdue), as the offensive line paved the way for All-American and Doak Walker Award winner Montee Ball to break the NCAA career touchdown record (86), and finish seventh nationally in total rushing, including three 200-yard individual rushing performances.

Miller coached NFL draft picks and 2012 All-Big Ten honorees Ricky Wagner, Ryan Groy and Travis Frederick, while helping to re-establish a physical standard of excellence throughout the unit - resulting in 586 total knockdown blocks in 13 games and four games with over 300 yards rushing in 2012. The Badgers were one of the least penalized teams in the nation, ranking 5th in penalties against and 4th in turnovers allowed.

In 2011, as a graduate assistant for the Badgers, Miller worked directly with the offensive line and tight ends, helping lead one of the best offenses in the country, averaging 44.1 points per game, 470 total yards per game and 235.6 rushing yards per game. He coached and worked with NFL first and second round picks, All-Big Ten honorees and All-Americans Kevin Zeitler and Peter Konz, Heisman Finalist Montee Ball, and NCAA record holder and NFL starter Russell Wilson. The Badgers were Big Ten champions in 2011 and participated in the 2012 Rose Bowl. Miller helped guide all five starting offensive linemen to receive either All-American or All-Conference honors.

Go Gophers!!

Miller is a good hire for the o-line, excited about this. With improved coaching, the additions of Wright and Calhoun at Guard, and the emergence of Connelly at LT (rumor is he's a beast and will be starting game 1), the line should be better than what we saw this year.

This is a really good hire. Miller coached at Wisconsin and Bielema promoted him to o-line coach during his last season. He went to New Mexico St. when Bielema left Wisky, and then was hired by Partridge (another UW assistant) at Florida Atlantic.

Thanks. Been reading his bio since my post. All sounds good. Anxious about the OC.

Maybe this hire can help sway Patrick Kasl out of stinky cheese land.

You may recall when Bielema hired Houston Nutt's old O-line coach and then fired him about three games into the season after an early loss to Oregon State. He then promoted Miller, a GA into the job. They went onto have a great season, and due to OSU and PSU ineligibility, they went to the Big Ten Championship and routed Nebraska. Badger fans were pissed when Anderson didn't retain him the following year. Obviously there was a lot of talent at Wisconsin in those years, but the guy from Arkansas/Ole Miss managed to screw it up and Miller was an astute enough observer as a GA to put it back together in short order. It's worth noting that Christ was not the OC that year, he was in his first year at Pitt.

Looks like a good hire to me. I remember the year that he was promoted to OL coach. There is no question that the line improved under him. Now comes the real important decision...the OC.

Hopefully not only will the coaching improve, but maybe the recruiting too. Seems like we've had a lot of OL recruits that really haven't reached their supposed potential (not sure if that's coaching or identifying the right recruits, or both).

I think it will help OL recruiting to see the guys from Wisconsin he helped get to the NFL.

On the surface this looks like a good hire to me.

We get a lot of good OL recruits but we just fail to develop them. This guy sounds like he could do that. I'm in!

Connelly? Not Quinn Oselund? I've heard he was a beast this year and nearly got his red shirt pulled..

I do like the WI ties because their running game would be great to have here

Are there any comments or statistics about the O line injury rate under him? I think that we have given randomness and bad luck too much credit for this issue and not given enough attention paid to the contribution coaching makes to keeping the big guys healthy.

As was noted before. When he was hired, Markuson decided to change the OL technique from a pulling/attacking premise, to more of a read and react premise. There was immediate blow back from the OL, to the point there were some ready to either quit or fight Markuson. After he Markuson was fired, Miller basically went back to the prior technique that was being taught by Bob Bostad(Titans OL coach, former UW coach). He had a several older, to be NFL players on that line, so it was an easy transition back.

With all that said, if he is able to instill the same techniques that he was taught and has been teaching, you will be seeing a better OL in the future for your Gophers.

This is right on.
It is also nice to add some youth to the staff for recruiting. I like this hire.

I was thinking the same thing. Would be great if both guys are ready to contribute!

My understanding is that Connelly is outstanding in moving his feet and Oselund is more of a mauler. I think they project as the left and right tackles of the future with Pirsig at RT Oselund will have to wait. They each have to gain 10 to 15 pounds but that's extremely doable.
