I caught the last half of the Iowa/Western Illinois game because it looked like the Leathernecks were going to pull off a victory in Iowa City.

With Western leading 77-75 as the fourth quarter wound down.

:17 Iowa missed a shot and Western rebounded
:14 Western called time out and advanced the ball to mid-court
:11 Iowa commited three fouls to send Western to the line. Western made the first and missed the second (78-75)
:09 Iowa rebounded the missed free throw and called timeout to advance the ball.
:04 After a quick play, Iowa’s Whitney Jennings (left alone in the corner!!!), nailed a three for the tie.

Iowa dominated overtime and won 96-81. For the game the Hawkeyes looked better inside (Coley and Gustafson) then they did with various guards.

I also caught a bit of the Rutgers (Minnesota’s first BIG opponent) home loss to St. Johns (69-62). At times the Scarlet Knights looked terribly disorganized; but I’ve learned not to judge them too quickly.

From a few nights ago, Bobby Kelsey is now 1-1 in her decision year after the Badgers lost 89-70 at home to Drake.
 

Tournament scores of note:

Cal State Northridge defeated Penn State 81-73 in Northridge’s tournament.

George Washington defeated Iowa 81-77 in 2OT at the Lone Star Classic. (Chase Coley had 22 points and 10 rebounds). GW is rated 24th and Iowa 25th.

Ohio defeated Indiana 63-56 in the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament

Maryland defeated South Dakota State 62-55 at the Paradise Jam

Wisconsin defeated Delaware 54-52 on a Cayla McMorris bucket with 3 seconds remaining.

With all the crappy programming(and continuous repeats) on espn/2/u/news......AND BTN, you would think we could at least get some rebroadcast coverage.
 


Considering it is Duke and ranked you would think we would get a prime time slot.
 

It was a decent night for the B1G in the ACC challenge winning four and losing two. The premier game of the night saw Notre Dame defeat Ohio State 75-72. The Irish led until Ohio State took the lead with about 2:00 minutes remaining; but Madison Cable nailed a three for Notre Dame and the Irish held on in South Bend. Kelsey Mitchell had 27 points for the Buckeyes and Cable, 25 points, 11 rebounds for the Irish.

In another top 20 match-up, Maryland ran away from Syracuse in College Park 82-64. I watched a lot more of the OSU/Notre Dame game.

In the night’s opener, Northwestern ran out to a 28-11 first quarter lead and stretched it 26 before the Tar Heels chipped away in the fourth quarter. UNC cut the lead to nine with a chance to make it seven before Northwestern got it back under control for an 85-72 win in Chapel Hill. For the Wildcats, Maggie Lyon had 31 points and 6 rebounds; Nia Coffey 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 turnovers (two of which helped fuel the UNC comeback).

Elsewhere:
Iowa won at Virginia 85-73 in a typically Hawkeye way (10 three pointers and 17-23 from the line).
Wisconsin won at Wake Forest 64-61 (McMorris with 16 points and 6 rebounds).
Illinois lost at Miami 73-64. Miami outscored Illinois in the fourth quarter 24-12.
 

Purdue lost to Boston College 58-56 on a game winning 3 pointer with 7.4 seconds left.
 

The conferences are tied 6-6. Nebraska is whipping NC State so whether the B1G can secure their first challenge victory comes down to a bottom feeder battle with Penn State trying to overcome a 44-42 deficit vs. Virginia Tech. 4th quarter coming up on BTN.
 



Among the B1G games of interest today: Northwestern remained undefeated by defeating Milwaukee 69-44. While Michigan was dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten by Princeton 74-57.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, trailing Creighton 50-34 with 7:39 remaining in the third mounted, a slow rally to win 65-63. I was wondering why Marissa Janning wasn’t playing for the Blue Jays so I looked it up and discovered she suffered a broken fibula in her left leg in late November during a game against Eastern Washington.

Purdue picked up a good win against Dayton 61-58 in a sluggish game. The score and the play was stuck at 55s for about two minutes before the last minute of play. Penn State lost to South Florida 101-79.

And Wisconsin lost to Marquette 77-61 in what increasingly looks like Bobbie Kelsey’s last season in Madison.
 

Tennessee pulled out a 58-51 win versus home standing Wichita State. It’s not a B1G game; but of interest to Gopher fans is that former Gopher Rangie Bessard started her first game for the Shockers. Rangie left Minnesota last January. Today, she was cleared to play by the NCAA. Jumping into action, Rangie played 35 minutes and had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals.

Bessard converted a three point play pulling the Shockers within one at 50-49 and later connected on two free throws to make it 52-51. I believe she’s the first of last year’s transfers to play. Wichita has only seven available players and is pretty much stuck with a four guard lineup with Rangie at the post. They still gave Tennessee a scare.
 

Some Saturday scores with a Gopher connection:

Memphis, who the Gophers defeated earlier this month, defeated Illinois in Memphis 81-75. Illini post, Chatrice White scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Tigers Aeriel Hearn, a non-factor against Minnesota, scored 29 points in the win.

Minnesota’s next opponent, North Dakota, lost 73-70 at home to South Dakota. Mia Loyd, daughter of former Gopher coach Curtis Loyd, had 22 points and 7 rebounds for the Fighting Hawks before fouling out.

Minnesota’s opening B1G opponent, Rutgers, looked very Rutgers like defeating LSU 69-57.
 

In Evanston, #16 DePaul handed #12 Northwestern its first loss 77-64. Former Illini, Jacqui Grant, played a key role for the Blue Demons. Grant was one of two Illini transfers granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA after a DePaul appeal.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, trailing 56-55 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter, went on a big run to defeat Northern Arizona 90-67. Husker freshman post, Jessica Shepard, posted 35 points and 8 rebounds. Shepard was 11-20 from the line. Shepard versus the Illini’s Chatrice White will be a much anticipated heavyweight match-up in Lincoln.

South Dakota, victors over North Dakota last week, knocked off Illinois in Champaign 87-76. Halfway through the 2nd quarter Illinois led 30-20. Unfazed, South Dakota launched a 28-7 run. The run continued until midway through the 4th quarter when the Coyotes peaked with a 19 point lead. Illinois slowly clawed within six during the final minute; but that was that.

The final stats look fairly even; but South Dakota looked the better team for the final two and half quarters. The Coyotes 12-26 shooting from three negated any Illini inside advantage. When the Illini put pressure on the three point shooters, the Coyotes shot lay-ups. South Dakota looked more like a Matt Bollant coached team than the Matt Bollant coached team. Then, again, half of Matt Bollant's team is elsewhere this season. Late in the game, Illini guard, Cierra Rice, landed awkwardly after being fouled on a driving layup and limped directly to the locker room.
 

This afternoon, Eastern Michigan (8-2) defeated Michigan (8-3) 64-63 in Ypsilanti. Eastern Michigan trailed by 19 in the first half; but outscored the Wolverines 19-6 in the 4th quarter taking their first lead in the final minute. EMU was led by two players from Osseo, Phillis Webb (22 points and 9 rebounds) and Janay Morton (11 points). Michigan's next game is the B1G home opener versus Purdue.
