Reeves excited for opportunity

H-backs and tight ends coach Rob Reeves will be doing the play-calling for the Gophers against Central Michigan at the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. He said his experience calling the offensive plays for Northern Illinois in their 40-17 victory over Fresno State in the 2010 Humanitarian Bowl will help.

“It’s exciting, we have a great group, it will be a group effort and we’ll all game-plan this thing together and work it together on gameday,” he said. “It’s no different than when we went to the bowl game with Northern Illinois out in Boise and played Fresno State. It was a great group effort, and we’ll do the same thing.”

Does he see the team changing much offensively? “I don’t think we’ll change much,” Reeves said. “You can’t change too much at this time of the year. We’ll attack Central Michigan and find their weaknesses, if there are any, and just go about doing what we do offensively.”

If Reeves has success against Central Michigan, maybe he could be the Gophers offensive coordinator in 2016.

Nothing against Reeves, but I'd prefer they find an experienced play caller.
 





If TC wanted Reeves, he likely would have named him as his OC already. Why keep it under wraps?
 

If Reeves is Tracy's man, I'll go with it, but otherwise I'd want someone with more OC experience.

Sid is definitely fishing on this one. I think the odds on Reeves being the OC next year regardless of how we play in the bowl game, are extremely long. If he truly were Claeys guy there is zero reason for Claeys not to go ahead and make it official.

Given the way this is being handled my guess is that they have someone in mind but he is currently coaching so they are holding off until after that teams bowl game. No clue who it might be but that would be my guess.
 

TC said he wanted the OC to also be the QB coach. I'd be surprised if he picked someone with little experience in one position, and none in the other, as the new OC. Especially because then he'd have to look for an H-back and tight end coach.

That's not quite accurate, TC wants a full time OL coach, with the OC also coaching QB or possibly RB. I think TC would prefer, that the OC also coached QBs, but he isn't set on it. Pat Poore, was the QB coach at N. Ill prior to Zebrowski, it's possible that he's moved back.
 

Let's see - if our offense does well in this one game vs MAC opponent then we should hire the guy. Thanks Sid. Good input.

I don't know if it's Sid writing (or dictating) anymore, but this has always been one of his long-standing ploys. He promotes a guy in the column and then that guy becomes one of his sources for pithy quotes and the like.

Just seems odd. If Reeves were going to be the OC, my guess is he would have already been promoted to the position.
 



I remember before the Insight Bowl vs. Kansas, Brew brought in Tim Davis to be the running game coordinator as he attempted to revamp the offense. Looked like a brilliant move after an 87 yard drive and a 79 yard drive to start the game. Only outscored 35-7 after that.

Mase promoted Lockwood to DC after an impressive bowl game I believe. It was the first time he was a coordinator.

Is firing an OC but keeping most of the Offensive staff to work with an outside hire for OC common?

I always hate the short-term thinking of some members of the media (Sid; I'm looking at you).

Speaking of short-term thinking, I believe it was Reusse who chimed in a few weeks ago about the Claeys hire being mistake if they're not prepared for the Bowl Game.

When an OC or DC gets fired you typically don't fire the other members of that side of the staff at the same time because you need them to bridge the gap to the new guy. However in most cases you give the new OC or DC some ability to either retain the existing coaches or bring in their own assistants once they are hired. So while Reeves, Poore, and Anderson are all safe for the time being, when the new OC is hired I think it will come down to how well all their personalities mesh.

Just my gut feeling but I don't think Claeys will force the new guy to keep the remaining members of the offensive staff, but he may try to encourage him to retain them for continuity if the new guy doesn't have strong feelings either way about them.

OVer and over TC has said one of the most important things he is looking for is an OC who fits in well with the team and coaches so I think you are right that TC will push the new guy to keep the staff TC hasn't fired.
 

RE: Sid. as someone said, Sid campaigns for people he knows and likes. I don't think any deep thought is involved. It's more like - hey, I like this guy, and he's calling the plays for the bowl game, so maybe he'll get the OC job." It's more wishful thinking on his part. There's no "inside information" involved. Sid always wants the 'local' guy to get the job.

Oh gawd I recall folks thinking that.

I enjoyed that game to but man... worked out for Horton, been out in San Diego for a while. There are worse places to land!
