If Claeys was the right coach then why couldn't he survive a national search? I don't understand this "we have to hire him in November or we lose a recruiting class" talk. A recruiting class ranked 39th is precious enough to save?

You do realize that Country Jer never won more than 8 games in a season? You do realize the gophers aren't going to make a bowl game this season.

Do you really believe Country Claeys is the best coach the gophers could hire?

Yes I do believe he is!

32nd in the 247 sports composite rankings and 28th when you look at average rating per recruit. Anyone who pays any attention to recruiting knows that the group of commitments we have right now is potentially the most talented we've had in a long time. Of course it isn't signing day yet and who knows what will happen between now and then. But right now it is very good for us.

Great Points. Unfortunately, you are trying to reason with the unreasonable.

It's not Country Claeys. IT'S BIG COUNTRY CLAEYS!!

According to Rivals the gophers are ranked 39th. Let's say it is around 30 for the sake of argument. Ok. Now what has Country Jer and Claeys done to warrant getting the job? Mason got 10 wins in a season. We've gone through Brewster and Kill for this?

Yes I am part of the "never should have fired Mason" crowd, but history has proven us correct. You who couldn't wait to get rid of Mason suddenly fall in love with a coaching staff that never got more than 8 wins and will not make a bowl game this year after 8 wins last year.

Thought you were the one man "Go get Lane Kiffin!" crowd?

Yes I wanted Kiffin. Given that Mason wouldn't come back I thought Kiffin was a good option. The U should have done a national search and if Claeys was good enough it would have been evident in the search and screen and interview process.

I don't see any other schools in the P5 coming for Country Claeys.

I believe that Coach Kill had the Gophers going in the right direction, despite a disappointing season this year. I support hiring Clayes because that will keep us going in the right direction. Yes, hiring him sooner rather than later protects the recruiting class, but it's not the sole - or even the primary - reason to support it.

If you don't think Kill had this team going in the right direction, then you probably wouldn't support hiring Clayes.

It's rare that the persona of a poster so precisely mirrors their handle.

You do realize that Mason won 10 in year seven? He won 4 in year 5. One 8 win season in first five years.

Yes I did not believe that Kill had the program going in the right direction especially when you see how this season has worked out. I believe that Kill had a limited ceiling in the Big Ten west. He is a good coach and was better than Brewster and the best we could hire at the time, but I do believe that the Gophers should have done a national search and would have gotten some very good applicants.

And yes I believe that Mason got robbed in that he never got a chance to coach and recruit with the new stadium.

He also went 10-2 at Kansas. Albeit in year 8.

How was the U suppose to do that without an AD? Most people (including me) are in the boat of hire Claeys right now on a short contract to at least stabilize the program where it is with the possibility for it to keep getting better since the current recruiting class will be the best in some time. It wasn't a question of who is the best coach we could hire. It was a question of who is the best coach to hire immediately until we get an AD. Claeys is that guy.

K, I'll stop feeding the troll now..

Kiffin? Are you nuts? You need a national search.

You expect an expensive national search with all the coaching vacancies that top notch candidates will be flocking to Minnesota as the most sought after job opening? Let me guess, you will recommend we hire the search firm that delivered us Villainous 7 Mega Tongue.

Never mind the current heart & soul rebuilding started by Kill and continued by Claeys? It is not good enough or quick according to your time table.

You must be a wizard you you can wave your magic wand, and poof MN becomes Ohio State overnight!

Yes, I do believe in Coach Claeys.

Perhaps just ban this reject now and get it over with already? As we all know this is nothing but a troll account and he/she is eventually going to get banned anyways for being a complete dink all of the time. Just trying to save everyone the time. Cheers!

Mason was 4-7 in year 5. The 2015 Gophers are 4-5 so far. If you think this year is a disaster that should pull the plug on the the Kill era, then you should have favored firing Mason in 2001.

Mason then went to five straight bowl games. Never should have fired Mason. Maturi compounded that Mistake by hiring Brewster. I am afraid this will be Gutekunst 2.0.

Did mason take the program to a new years day bowl?
