Warning: Unconfirmed rumor. !!!!!!!

From Doogie on Twitter:

Interesting to get a text saying Jeff Jones spent time this week at DB in #Gophers practice. Still listed as OUT on injury report.

If he is a running back body and is a clear #3 behind freshmen.
And if he is good. D back makes as much or more sense than WR.

Nothing makes sense about the Jeff Jones saga...at least not to me.

Ticket to NFL?

Jones could be a beast back there.

Only time will tell whether he will be a key contributor. Sitting out all of last season was a set back that he hopefully will overcome.

with his injury problems I don't see him playing defense working out so well. I was so pumped when he committed (much like I was with Maresh) and he may end as a footnote on senior day if things don't start working out better for him

TC playing mind games - releasing misdirection before JJ is unleashed.

If that is the case I just hope he is unleashed soon. I wouldn't want to clock to run out.

Too soon?

I read your headline as d-bag. That's never good.

You could see this coming. Well, not a switch to d-back, but in general things have not been adding up. I am amazed at the number of people that have continued to maintain he is about to break out any minute now. Top RB recruit in years switches to WR to "help the team right away" while two freshman backs carry the ball? Not alarming? If his move to db is true, I'm sure it is just to get him valuable playing time while he learns the finer points of running with the football at the college level.

What does this all tell us about the 4/5 star recruiting hype/ "system" that some on this board swear by and constantly defend?

some possibilities:

1. They were all wrong and Jones should have been a 1 star
2. Our coaching staff is inept and does not know how to properly utilize JJ, who would running for 300 yards a game at Wisconsin?
3. Jeff Jones had to sit out for one year and therefore as anyone would expect, lost most of his RB skills and mental ability (we all know playing RB is all about IQ as AP and several Nebraska RBs have shown us)
4. Jeff Jones is seriously injured and so beat up from practice that he may never play again. (please remind me of why Minnesota is beating the hell out of vet players like Campion and DE Keith in practice anyway)

Tweet from Burns says he's been practicing at DB for a couple of weeks. Probably a bye week switch.

So, has there been a depth chart release?..

FWIW, Ryan Burns responded to that Doogie tweet and said that Jones has been there (DB) "for a couple weeks now".

Or could it be 5. No system is 100% perfect in predicting the future of college prospects and is bound to have exceptions, although the star system remains overall very accurate?

thing is we don't need help at db......we do need help on offense.... only playmaker we have is maye and thats an issue....unless the kid is not healthy seams more like a coaching problem than anything

We don't need help at DB this year, but next year we'll be real thin there.

we got jay..... im not worried about db.. sure if we a want to be average again lets just throw our best athletes at db....and yea i saw he is listed as out but he has been practicing there for a couple weeks (according to these posts) and as far as anything i've read it's nothing more than a percy harvin problem when concerning injury....all im getting at is we have to score to win and our current team can't do that

Hope it works out for him at DB. The staff put in a ton of work just to get him into school, but I'm guessing when they were doing that they weren't envisioning him as a DB. Hopefully he'll be a difference-maker in either backfield before his career is over.

I would say that maybe the talent level in Minnesota HighSchool's made him look better than he is, but didn't he play well in one of those national games? UA or something like that? It's wierd, and he still has time, but it seems like-on a higher average- the highly touted local guys we get don't seem to pan out. Am I way off here?

This is very true and they have two very good freshmen running backs.
Jeff played safety for Washburn as well.

I have no doubt that he could excel at DB given the opportunity. On another note, can he take a medical redshirt this year?

System works on a population of players, but is not foolproof on a small sample like a single player. Teams that have higher star rated recruits generally perform better than teams with lower star rated recruits.

Don't you have to miss two seasons because of injury to qualify for that ?
