per FSN:

Brooks, though, wasn't a known commodity down in SEC country, however. Despite rushing for 2,223 yards for Pickens High School in Georgia and being named Class AAAA Region 7 Player of the Year, FBS schools weren't exactly knocking down his door. In fact, Gophers head coach Jerry Kill said Brooks was a "late take" for Minnesota on the recruiting trail.

Turns out, Minnesota was one of only two Power 5 conference teams to offer Brooks a scholarship, the other being Georgia Tech, which is just over an hour away from Brooks' high school. Buffalo and Georgia State were the only other FBS schools to offer Brooks.

"From an SEC standpoint, I just don't know if he passed the look test," Minnesota offensive coordinator Mat Limegrover said of the 6-foot, 206-pound Brooks. "I think probably coaches saw him on film, saw that he was a good player, went by and saw him, saw that he wasn't 6-2, that he wasn't 240, so they moved on."

Said Kill: "We knew he was fast. I thought he had a chance coming in that he had a chance to play." In fact, Kill said he knew during camp he wouldn't be redshirting Brooks.

Go Gophers!!

Even when he runs he looks kind of slow and rambling, and yet he keeps going.

I think Leroy Clark would tell you that he is doing more than just turning heads!

Late take? He committed in September.

Also, 240? How many SEC RBs are 240? Derrick Henry is enormous, and he's 242. I know they need to talk and say something when asked questions, but the exaggeration is annoying.

The lofty praise from Kill reminded me of the comments he made about Rodney Smith when he graded out perfect in a game earlier this season.

If you read the press conference transcript Kill was actually talking about Rodney Smith. The FSN guy obviously misunderstood.

Gotcha, thanks. That makes sense.

After the Purdue 'runs' I did a Youtube look at his HS highlights. He was an abusive runner then as well. Brooks will make some D-Backs tentative about tackling him for a split second and that's all he needs. Watched some of his interviews and he seems like he has a good head too. Glad he's a Gopher!

I'd say not offering a commitable scholy until September is late, relative to 12 year old signees Urban is starting to take. There are recruiting profiles out there for kids who aren't freshman in high school yet. Kids don't make their decisions on national signing day anymore. If the player is highly regarded, you see them committing as juniors more and more.

In turn, you're exaggeration of the writers exaggerations is annoying.

I would like to see some measurement of his ability to make a cut, start up, and cut again. He can jump cut also like he is skiing. 4 years of 27 could be very special.

This class continues to show amazing things.

The only thing I can see as to why he was lightly recruited is that he is from a small town and I assume a small school. Maybe some coaches figured his hs competition was not strong enough. But like everyone posting, I'm glad he's here too.
