per the Courier Journal:

Brooks' 71-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half provided a momentum swing that Purdue never recovered from and the Gophers rolled to a 41-13 victory. Brooks rushed for 176 yards on 17 carries against the Boilermakers.

"He reminds me of (former Minnesota running back) Marion Barber," Minnesota coach Jerry Kill said of Brooks. "He is quick on the hole. He is so physical and he has get-over speed. He is special."

Brooks and redshirt freshman Rodney Smith, both Georgia high school products, helped a makeshift offensive line regain the physical and hard-nosed identity that has labeled the Gopher football program in the past.

At Tuesday's practice, Kill said he kicked out the quarterbacks and told the offensive line that the Gophers, who ranked last in the Big Ten in rushing before Saturday, were going to run the ball at least 45 times against Purdue.

Minnesota ran it 48 times, grinding out 326 yards and re-establishing itself as a threat on the ground.

"That is more like what Minnesota is supposed to look like," Kill said.

Go Gophers!!

Not to be a downer after a great win but... Coach, you won't be able to do this against every team.

Let Coach Kill have his moment. Wait until at least the 10th post of the thread to drop the turd into the punch bowl.

He knows, but he's also gotta bring the teams spirit up and at least let everyone enjoy it.

They plowed through a bad team like they should, that's more than they did vs. Kent st. and Ohio.... good reason to be positive.

I agree. TONS of progress yesterday. Gots to get that confidence rolling!!

Same comment we have heard time and time again from the f@cking "experts" for the last three years.

Yet, by season's end, the ship has pretty much righted itself. Stop the crying.

You cannot play the way they did in the past 3 games either. To say you won't be able is a strange statement. When Nebraska used to run the ball 55 times it worked against just about everyone. Wisconsin was built on running the ball, heck the Iowa back carried the ball 43 times yesterday. Certain teams have lost their way going away from pounding the rock and are now in no mans land. See USC. Nebraska. Penn State, TOSU. The key to running the ball, is attitude, execution, commitment, and the will to get it done. We certainly are not going to win going Air Raid.

No but last year gophers did put 21 on OSU, 24 on Wisconsin, 28 on Nebraska and 51 on Iowa while never eclipsing 140 passing yards in any of those games. All had at least quality if not stellar defenses.

Had we not given up on the run game v NW, I think we would've been in that game. I thought that as I was watching. We weren't tearing it up by any means, but we were making some okay runs for a while. Don't know much about it, but I have a feeling if you keep pounding, even with three and outs, eventually it will come. Always seemed to work in the past.

We gave up the run because NW had 10 in the box since we couldn't complete a forward pass. Purdue had strong safeties that could be pushed off their feet by the running backs off hand. Purdue was awful in that game.

Even more impressive. 10 in the box and we were still getting three yards and a few times four. Just keep working it over and over and then spring a pass on them. They were too impatient. Let things unfold. Even Kill would agree he abandoned the run too soon that game. That's my take on the NW debacle.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Although we obviously don't have Cobb anymore there's a reason the run game works so well in college.

We attempted a lot of run plays against NW that resulted in very poor execution on the blocking front. I recall a few runs to the perimeter that had no one blocking for Smith or Brooks. The Purdue game was much better in terms of execution. Hopefully a few more wrinkles in the offense start coming out as the overall execution improves.
