per Amelia's Q&A:

@captainlander: @AmeliaRayno Whose play will pleasantly surprise us, once the Gopher basketball season gets under way? #aMAILiaBAG

Good question. I think because of the way this team is constructed – lots of youth, lots of newcomers – there will be a lot of relative surprises this season, but one player I might point out with the potential to make an early impression is Murphy. That possibility is probably compounded by the fact that he hasn’t gotten as much press as freshmen Kevin Dorsey and Dupree McBrayer have, and because he was a late addition to the bunch, committing in May. Already this summer, Pitino has lauded his steadiness and confidence, and the Texas forward who was previously committed to VCU has the kind of frame and physical mentality that could earn him success in the Big Ten right away. His defensive capabilities will get him on the court, and if he can use his athleticism to score regularly, he could be a difference-maker. With so little experience on the roster, the Gophers likely will need someone unexpected to contribute in a big way – my guess is some of that load will fall on Murphy.

Go Gophers!!

Mom said if you cant't say something nice...

Using the Amelia theorem, I now expect about an 80% chance that Murphy plays 3 minutes of mop up time a game.

I'm defending her... at this time last year Pitino was touting Martin, just as he is Murphy this year.

I don't really remember the same way you do. I think it was more of us on the message boards touting him than Pitino himself.

“The biggest question mark that we have as a team is the back-up power forward spot,” said Pitino after the team’s win over Division-II Franklin Pierce. “[Sophomore] Charles Buggs and Josh Martin, they've still just got a long way to go when it comes to defense, when it comes to rebounding the ball … Josh Martin’s not real confident."

The biggest difference between Murphy and Martin is A. Murphy is the higher rated recruit. It doesn't mean everything, but this day in age, with all of the different scouting services, they do a pretty solid job of getting it right. B. Murphy looks like he has perimeter skills unlike Martin.

lol... fun stuff.

Martin....I think I shared enough to let people understand.

Murphy, there aren't a lot of options so let's hope for the best... great late pick up though, no doubt. Can DR.

McBrayer is the one to watch, though.

I totally agree once they started to practice you are correct...but State Fair time and nowish Pitino was talking how much more athletic Martin was than King. Martin was doing 360's and Joey wanted to try and Pitino said he wasn't that kind of athlete...went on to say how athletic, how awesome Martin would be etc... When the season started Martin wet himself on the court for all to see including Pitino. And I'm sure Pitino knew shortly after practices began it was going to take time for Martin.

To be clear I totally agree, I don't think Martin and Murphy are similar. Murphy is better. And Pitino has practiced with Murphy and already seen him play in Spain.

But this year they have already practiced and played a hand full of games. So comments may carry more weight.

My gosh.."To be clear I totally agree, I don't think Martin and Murphy are similar. Murphy is better. And Pitino has practiced with Murphy and already seen him play in Spain." Isn't your comment exactly what that sentence says to you? Is there a poke the dog emo I missed? You are quoting it but pretending I didn't say it? You are trying to pass copyscape? What?

You contradict yourself in many posts, just keep your cool and everything will be fine.

Pitino's team will be fun to watch and this year it is the real beginning of the Pitino era. No need to be so negative and jump to such illogical conclusions.

Yep!

I remember it the same as you. I remember Pitino basically saying he was super athletic but raw.
