No word yet if Nebraska fans will start doing the old "We've got the spirit, yes we do, we've got the spirit, how about you?" chant to opposing fans:

Go Gophers!!

Like a lot of things, if the players buy in and do it with enthusiasm, it's cool. If not, then it's weird.

I love that chant......

"We've got spirit just the same, sit down, shut up, and watch the game!"

Next up, "Jolly good show, old boy!"

I'm more interested in what they'll be chanting after we beat them for the 3rd year in a row.

It may be a persona with Mike Riley but if it is, it is a good one. Riley comes across as a just a genuinely good and nice man. He hasn't coached in Winnipeg since 1990 but he is still very available to Winnipeg media and always coming back or sending messages to former players, most recently for the 25th anniversary of his 1990 Grey Cup team. He is even "hosting" a bunch of former players and executives for a Nebraska game at some point this year.

To his credit, Mike Riley acknowledges the corniness of it....

Riley was introduced to the "Hip, Hip Hooray" chant as an assistant under coach Cal Murphy with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in 1983.

"Of course, then when I became the head coach of that team, I had to keep doing it," Riley said Monday, seemingly a bit embarrassed by the release of the video. "And then as we get superstitious and go forward in life and there's other jobs, we did it all the way through."

Riley said he told the Huskers that they might think the chant was "corny," but that we "have to do this anyway."

How did the team react?

"They were great," Riley said. "I was hoping to get some kind of response, and they were pretty much into it. The culmination of a win and being able to do that, it can turn into some fun."

No doubt, if the Huskers win at Miami on Saturday, legions of Nebraska fans will join in the corny, new tradition.

Bring back the old "less filling" "tastes great" cheer
