This morning on the Dari and Mel show on ESPN Radio, they were discussing the B1G. Both Dari and Mel gave their most overrated team award to Minnesota.

However, it's not as negative as it sounds. Mel said he likes the Gophers but doesn't love them, and the overrated designation is more a reflection of some in the media considering the Gophers threats to win the West. That may be true. He also said that going forward he thinks Minnesota's program has a ceiling of about 8 wins because of recruiting disadvantages, which I hope isn't true.

There is a tendency to imagine things remaining as they have been, and perceptions take a while to change. Wisconsin and Iowa don't have any significant inherent recruiting advantages over us, but they have a perception of having higher ceilings.

Practice facilities anyone? We have the worst in the B1G. Not trying to start another facility debate, but it is a disadvantage until shovels are in the ground.

When's the last time a Gophers football team has been considered overrated? Doesn't happen very often.

Right but we absolutely can catch up in the facilities. Therefore the ceiling can be higher than 8 wins. It seems like he was talking more about lack of in-state talent, weather perception makes it hard to get recruits from the south, etc. And that is ridiculous because Iowa and Wisconsin have done it.

Gophers may be overrated this year but to suggest the ceiling is 8 wins is ridiculous.
Kansas has had an 11 win season and orange bowl win in the past 10 years.

Anyone who says there is a ceiling of a win total is being hyperbolic.

The gophers may never be a 10 win team annually, but that doesn't mean their ceiling is 8 wins.

I never liked these guys.

Gotta love Mel's captivating breakdown of the Batchellor every Saturday. He actually ranks the women like the players on his draft boards. September can't come fast enough.

Well if a team can win 8 games they can win 12

there is not a whole lot of difference in those 4 games, a turn over here an injury there a bad call by the refs and those 4 losses turn into wins

pretty stupid of so called football experts to even think otherwise. putting absolutes on 18-22 year olds is like predicting the weather? can get it right sometimes but more times they get it wrong

Don't forget Wake Forest, who was 11-2 and went to the Orange Bowl in 06-7. Gophers have won 8 games back to back with mostly recruits that no one else wanted. It appears that the staff is bringing in a higher quality of recruit now so it's not unreasonable to expect a higher ceiling as these recruits begin to filter into the 2 deeps.

Completely agree.

Incredible, talk about kicking a program. Most folks would see the program on the rise after years of struggle followed by two years of 8-5. The following segment they said Duke could never be overrated! Really love it though, Kill uses the "underdog" label better then any coach! Cannot wait to see the GOPHERS win the west THIS year!

Completely agree.

So would you make a bet that the gophers can't get above 8 wins in the next 10 years? (that's what a ceiling would imply, and I've heard you like to make bets)

You're right that putting a ceiling on a win total is stupid, but I'd avoid using the 07 season as an example to prove anything. That was the most drunk crazy season of the last 50 years

I've looked at lots of predictions for the Big Ten West over the last couple of months and I think "overrated" is the wrong word choice. There are very few predictors betting on a first place Minnesota finish. There are more predicting a second place finish but even those are a minority. 3rd or 4th place seems to be the most common prediction and I've seen a couple placing the Gophers as low as 5th.
If you take all of these predictions together, the median expectation for the Gophers' divisional placement is probably around 2.5 or 3 which seems fairly modest to me. But sportswriters and media personalities tend not to be particularly numerate in their thinking.
