CBS: Idaho coach Paul Petrino angrily confronts reporter, restrained

It appears Paul Petrino does not take kindly to reporters critiquing his team.

According to the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, Petrino had to be restrained by an assistant after angrily confronting a reporter from the paper at the end of practice on Wednesday. The reporter, Michael-Shawn Dugar, says that Petrino was upset with him over a piece he wrote discussing Idaho's vertical passing attack, which Dugar described as a work in progress.

I'll let Dugar explain what happened next:

Petrino walked up to me and the [Lewiston] Tribune reporter just outside the practice field and began to scream in my face, loudly informing us how many deep balls the team completed Wednesday. He then went on to chide us for our inaccurate criticisms of quarterback Matt Linehan and our lack of football knowledge, walking away saying, "You don't even know what the (expletive) you're talking about! Do your (expletive) job!"

Then he turned back and started to move toward me, still angrily shouting expletives about my writing and my professionalism while being physically restrained by one of his assistants, approaching me as if he had plans to do something other than verbally express his concerns.

lol, what a tough guy. I get not giving this reporter privileged access if you don't like what he writes, but confronting him and making a scene because of this article? Takes a big man to do that. Wouldn't last two days in the TC media market.

.....on second thought, the idea of someone confronting Fatrick is appealing. Can we get him on retainer?
 

Many, if not most, football coaches at all levels are Blowhards - "Little Napoleons" if you will. Not the Harbaugh brothers however.
 

That reporter should be fired. Look what he wrote:

Drops are the culprit, occasionally, but most of the time the quarterbacks and receivers just aren't in sync.

Interesting when you only hear one side of the story. Did Petrino get carried away, yes, did he have to be restrained as the writer claimed, not according to two athletic department officials who said they witnessed the encounter. My guess is that there was more than just the article that led to this. Coaches need to be held to high standard but sometimes the crap that so called reporters put out there is pathetic. I guess I want to give Petrino the benefit of doubt since he honored a scholarship offer to a player who was diagnosed with cancer just days before national signing day and he stuck with his word. He showed some character there, not so much with whatever this was. Who knows how much character this reporter has but he already seems to be stretching the truth. But heh, it makes for a better story!
 


Idaho is not the place for a football coach to live stress-free. The Vandals are 3-32 over the last 3 years, with average home attendance under 13000. They survive financially with paid beatings on the road, this year at USC and Auburn. Petrino will probably go bonkers again before he's done, which probably isn't far off.
