It is time to gesticulate. Streveler is lining up as a WR in practice is a tell-tale sign.

Is Jerry Kill toying on fast tracking Demry Croft's development and burning his redshirt? Time for him to gain on the job experience for next season.

He wants to put the best talent on the field. I wouldn't be surprised if towards the end of this season Croft shares playing time with Leidner, especially garbage time.

Croft shares the starting duties next year with Leidner as a two-headed monster. That will be a sight to see.

Tony Poljan if his commitment sticks will transition right behind Croft and redshirts. This is definitely a talent infusion at a critical position and a good predicament to have. Eventually, it will be Croft sharing duties with Poljan.

I think the Gophers Offense can become very explosive under Croft and Poljan.

Jerry Kill plays to win!

He has said in the past he'll put the best talent on the field. True Freshmen Huff and Hardin and others that he had mentioned on Sports Huddle will not redshirt.

I would expect Perra or Rhoda contemplate transferring if they want playing time.

This is not a knock on Croft but if he plays this year, we are in trouble. You don't win with true freshman quarterbacks.

Why is Perra getting no love this year? Is he hurt?

I think you undervalue experience especially in the QB position. Next year it will be Mitch, Perra with Rhoda and Croft fighting it out for 3ed. I agree that Croft has the most natural talent of the QB's but the starting QB has to have internalized the playbook plus having to make split second decisions as to what kind of defense the team is facing. That simply takes time.

I also agree that Kill wants to win - that is why he won't put an inexperienced QB on the field and Kill sure as heck won't burn Croft's redshirt.

Perra was hurt before the Spring scrimmage which is unfortunate. Did he play in last Saturday's scrimmage? Would've love to see him get an opportunity to play. I don't know how he stacks up against Streveler and Rhoda. We don't have access to all the practices.

I take back my words.

We see how Mitch's development is. It was him and Philip Nelson with little experience out of necessity. Determination, hard work and a positive attitude got Mitch to where he is thank goodness for the team. We may not have back to back eight win seasons.

Unless Croft is a quick understudy and has natural ability to zone read, make quick decisions, etc... he is better off redshirting and spending time in strength and conditioning.

On the other side of the coin, we don't want to ruin a QB by rushing him out too soon without all the development tools.

Are there very many true Freshmen QBs out there playing right away? I am curious.

Well, having Streveler and Leidner on the field at the same time opens up some interesting plays.

I'd like to see 1:15 and 9:28. The latter is one of the the most beautiful things I've ever seen in college football.

One more thing. Will we see the playbook opened up more this year? I hope to see improvements in both the passing & running game.

Utilize Edwards and Jeff Jones. Don't forget Shannon Brooks will be a factor along with Rodney Smith & Rodrick Williams. The are also a slew of WRs KJ Maye, Drew Woli, Isaiah Gentry, Melvin Holland, Eric Carter, etc...

We've got a few more weapons and opportunities to widen the playing field.

playing right away or playing well? would definitely change the list

When they're both on the field, defenses won't be completely sure who will be lining up at QB. If Streveler is at QB and the defense doesn't take Leidner seriously at WR, that could be interesting.

Similar to Kill's 2010 NIU Team utilizing Jordan Lynch and Chandler Harnish?

I am so hopeful of our WRs, but this is a gigantic ?. Just count up the career receptions of the 5 guys you listed. Add in our TEs and JJ as well and it is obvious why. If you subtract Woli's drops from that number it becomes very frightening. We also have struggled in pass protection and in passing accuracy. I am hoping some tweaks to the scheme are coming and our experience will grow, but someone besides KJ needs to step up big time - beyond their years.

I don't think Croft will play this year. That said, I think experience gets overrated at the QB position in college. We see plenty of young QBs have successful seasons (even a few Heisman worthy seasons in recent years) and plenty of "ok" young quarterbacks who never take a big step forward when they get into their junior/senior seasons.

True. Since 2002.......Only 5 True Fr QBS have had 9 or 10 Win seasons
Henne and Stafford had 9
Mustain, Ainge, Pryor had 10

One thing I've learned about Kill is that he's not afraid to burn a redshirt. If Croft is better than Strevler, he's going to play this year.

Agreed. Croft isn't going to win us games that Mitch can't this year. 3rd year Mitch is still better than true frosh Croft. Next year you'll see some Croft in cleanup time and against the bad teams. Granted injuries can change everything. But Streveler is a career backup at the position and better at receiver if he wants any chance of moving on. Let's see how Mitch's passing can look with some guys who go up and get balls. Yes, Leidner's had bad numbers, but he's had an awful receiving crew the last 2 years.

To expand on that, lets round Leidner's numbers to 50% and and say there were 16 passes in a game, so 8 incomplete. Two or three would have been bad throws and two would have been drops, lets say that Mitch makes one better throw for a completion and the receivers only drop one, you the have a 10/16 passer for 63%. It's not going to take huge improvements to make a big difference. Mitch will still be Mitch there will be some bad throws but the offense will be more efficient.

Kill has no issues with "burning redshirts" when he feels it will help the team. Phil Nelson didn't play until the 6th or 7th game of his true freshman year.

Cobb just set the all-time single season rushing mark. I'm not sure how much better the rushing game can get....

4th year Mitch

I'm still just trying to figure out the damn thread title.

I'm with you. It sounds like something out of anatomy class. If I told my wife to stop her gesticulation, I'd be on the couch.

Maybe he meant speculation.

The chances of Mitch starting and playing in all 12 games, with his running style, are slim. At some point, chances are we'll be in a close game, and we'll need to trot out our #2 QB.

If Croft is the 2nd best QB, don't think for second he won't be on the field. If he's still behind Streveler/Perra/Rhoda, he redshirts. It's really that simple.

Part in bold nails it. People spend so much time fretting about redshirts and what not. Coaches play the guys they think will win games, regardless of their class.

This whole thread started with speculation on what it means to see Streveler lining up at WR and suddenly it turned into a "Croft will be playing this year" thread. What blows me away about that is that all last year we had countless threads about Perra and now all of the sudden he is an after thought in this thread.

Streveler lining up at WR could mean any number of things. First and foremost it could mean the coaches just don't see him as an effective option at QB but feel he is a good enough athlete that maybe he can help elsewhere. May have nothing to do with Croft if the staff feels Streveler is behind guys like Perra and Rhoda and that he really isn't going to be a viable option at QB if Mitch goes down at some point.

maybe not individual performance, but more long TD runs would be nice

Hah! I knew it will grab attention of serious Gopherholers.

What I mean is speculate, but gesticulate sounded cooler in the late hour.

ges·tic·u·late
jeˈstikyəˌlāt/
verb
verb: gesticulate; 3rd person present: gesticulates; past tense: gesticulated; past participle: gesticulated; gerund or present participle: gesticulating

use gestures, especially dramatic ones, instead of speaking or to emphasize one's words.
"they were shouting and gesticulating frantically at drivers who did not slow down"
synonyms: gesture, signal, motion, wave, sign
"they frantically gesticulated to get someone's attention"

I suppose putting Croft at #2 would classify as a "dramatic gesture" on the part of the coaches...............

I doubt they burn a redshirt for relief duty in one game. Obvious the goal is to win now but they still have to keep in mind the impact current decisions have on the future. People saying Croft has the potential to be the best QB of the bunch doesn't mean he is the best QB now. There is a difference.

I highly doubt Croft has the arm strength and stamina required to throw the ball up to 7 times in a game.

The example you give is the one time where coaches are unlikely to burn a redshirt. Obviously if it is only the matter of one game you would hopefully have a non redshirt freshman you felt confident in taking the reigns. But I promise you that while coaches are aware of the future and plan for it to a certain degree their primary focus is winning now.

Given how volatile the coaching landscape is you would be hard pressed to find a staff that would choose not to play a guy they know could truly help them now in order to hopefully have them 5 years from now. And yes I know late in the year Kill said the young WR might have been good enough to play but I look at that far more as coach speak. Had those guys truly been ready to go last year it would have been foolish not to play at least one of them given how horrible our WR corps has been the past few years.

I highly doubt they go to him if Leidner gets injured in game one either. He's not going to be ready to play by that time and by the time he is ready, it won't be worth burning a redshirt. But that's just my guess.
