DON'T PRINT THAT

Name to remember in Gophers athletics director search: Blake James. The University of Miami athletics director has degrees from Minnesota State Mankato and the University of St. Thomas and is a 1987 Coon Rapids High School grad who before he took the A.D. job was the Hurricanes' development director for major gifts and oversaw the school's athletics facilities upgrades, which included a new practice field for football.

James was hired by then-Miami president Donna Shalala, who at the University of Wisconsin hired football coach Barry Alvarez, the Badgers' current A.D.

Go Gophers!!

That is what I'd like to see in our candidates - connection to the area and experience running an athletics program. Peter Najarian is a long shot. What he lacks in experience in running a program I hope he'll make up in fundraising ability.

Beth Goetz the interim AD should also be considered. She has good rapport with Jerry Kill and runs the operations smoothly. Right now, she is a stabilizing force post NT while they search for a permanent AD.

If they hire a new AD other than her, they should put in a clause that the new AD must keep her. We need dynamic stability in the Athletics Department.

Forgot to mention Dan O'Brien. Why not look internal to excellent people you already have that are promotable?

Reusse threw out an interesting option today - bring back Mark Dienhart. I have to agree with Reusse that Dinehart was a good guy who was turned into a scapegoat in the wake of the academic fraud case.

(admitting bias - I had some dealings with Dienhart when he was at St. Thomas. A definite good guy - don't know if he would be interested in coming back to the U. He's in his 60's, and is running the Schultze Foundation now.)

In this day and age Alvarez would have been forced to "resign" at Whiskey due to all of his campus diddling. Bad comparison.

Seeing as he is still the AD in this day and age at Wisconsin, you are clearly wrong.

I graduated with Blake...good guy and a huge sports fan.
