Will the Norwood Teague debacle affect football/basketball attendance?

I'll preface this by saying that I realize that there are much bigger issues at stake here than attendance, but I believe it is a question worth asking.

Additionally, GH'ers are clearly towards the die-hard Gophers fan end of the spectrum. If you are inclined to answer, I would love to hear whether this will affect your support for Gophers athletics. And I would also love to hear whether you think this will affect the interest level and attendance of casual fans.

In my opinion I think casual fans first thought about the Gophers will be "Norwood Teague is a sleeze-ball," instead of "I hear the Gophers are going to be good this year, we should go to a game." So attendance might take a slight hit. Just my two cents.
 

My thought is that, by the start of the season Teague will be yesterday's news, beat TCU and there will be no problems with attendance.
 

well since Norwood was the one who instituted the 3 yr football season ticket price hike, yes, he absolutely affected my attendance because I quit as a ticketholder

i've already wondered if someone else was in charge last year would I still have my ticket...
 

Since we have more STH than last year, no. Since this will completely blow over soon, no.
 

Smarties in the back booth at Al's Breakfast were overheard talking about the "Donation" seating prices being frozen after this year. That would be a good thing in my opinion.
 


Everything becomes tomorrow's butt wipe, even this. This, too, shall pass.

I know it is probably just coffee talk, but I am sure a lot of people would think this is a good thing.
 

I would think this would have zero affect. In fact, it might even be a small positive as it sounds like Teague had really alienated supporters of woman's sports (both of them! Bah-boom, I will be here all week) and maybe they will support football/ men's basketball now that Teague is gone.

Real key to attendance? Like every year, a good team and lots of wins will mean big crowds, lots of losses will mean small crowds.

This. TCU sold out of season tickets this year. Winning does a lot for a team.
 




No one went to basketball or football games because of Norwood Teague and no one will stop going because of Norwood Teague. This is especially true now that NT is no longer an employee of the University of Minnesota. People attend sporting events based upon there entertainment value. This will still be the case this fall and winter.
 


Yes it will. Norwood will not be attending any football or basketball games. A net loss of one.

NT had zero to do with you giving up your ticket. The machine which is Power 5 conference football added the ticket fee.

Bingo....I think if you polled fans around the nation and asked if the schools AD had any impact on whether or not they would attend a sporting event I would guess that you would only find a handful of people that would say it matters.

Well Norwood signed a letter that accompanied an email I got last December, that's all I know.

Some 'fans' will say they won't attend now. But 99% of them were never going to attend a game anyway.

I think a lot of people who dropped their season tickets due to NT's price increases would disagree with you. But that was already done before this news. To answer the OP, no this debacle shouldn't really affect anything. The attendance will be determined by the winning of the teams. Basketball might be way down this year. In football, beat TCU and attendance won't be a problem the rest of the year.
 

I think many are expecting/hoping that the new AD comes in and rethinks the additional scholarship donation increases that NT put in place. this would affect future attendence (along with winning) if they freeze and hold at this years levels they might actually see an increase in season ticket holders
 

No, it won't affect attendance. It is a blemish on the ethics of the U, however, and may be used by competing schools in recruiting. If so, I'm glad -- it shows that we're competing for some of the same talent that the other schools seek.
