Former Butler HC Brad Stevens on Gophers' interim-AD Beth Goetz: "A rock star"

per Strib:

The new leader of Gophers athletics, at least for the moment, is Beth Goetz, who has remained relatively anonymous to the general public.

So just who is Goetz?

“A rock star,’’ said Brad Stevens, the Boston Celtics coach who praised Goetz’s leadership skills from their years together at Butler when he was the men’s basketball coach there.

Stevens in a telephone conversation Friday said he was especially impressed by Goetz’s demeanor during their years together at Butler.

“That temperament in that job is so important. She just has a great way about her, and she’s really, really thoughtful,” Stevens said. “Beth has clearly been a rock star for a long time. … The No. 1 thing of being a great leader, especially when times get more difficult, is authenticity. And you know what you’re getting from her every day.”

It may be a strategic (if not cynical) move, given the current Title IX challenges, for the U to hand the reigns of the Athletics department to Goetz full time. After all, it couldn't hurt to have a woman as the face of the department to help fend off the charges of inequality.

The spin and lobbying for Goetz begins.

The women coaches are already going on record praising her and calling her one of us because Goetz was a college athlete and understands the plight of small sports and women's sports.

Link please of where the women's coaches are going on record.

Gender doesn't matter. Why would Stevens be inauthentic in his comments? I trust his appraisal. If she's that kind of leader and talent, she should be at the top of the list for the permanent job.

Tell me where I spun or lobbied on Goetz's behalf in my statement. I merely wondered whether the U might cynically formulate a strategy to hire her full-time for the means of fending off recent Title IX violation accusations. If you take that as lobbying for her, then have at it.

Oh, those dastardly women pretending to like football. Can't trust them. They obviously couldn't be qualified to be AD because they never coached football or played it even with multiple opportunities to do so.

I suppose that's possible, but based on what I can find, Thompson would have to take a pay cut if he became the Gopher AD. He's making more money as Conference commission than Teague was getting at the U. So, he takes a pay cut, or the U jacks up the AD's salary to land him.

I vote for Goetz.

I don't care if the next AD is male or female, as long as they understand that if Men's FB & BB are not exceptional that all other sports suffer and the U suffers.

Actually, I'm guessing anyone who gets to that level probably understands it a whole lot better than we deep thinkers on GH. For all the bashing Maturi gets, people seem to forget the Bank was built on his watch. And, oh ya, seems he hired the football coach everyone wants to make sure to keep.

He can't disown the Brewster hire but it's not that different from Norwood hiring Pitino which, by the way, might turn out to be equally disastrous. You've also got Norwood's extensions, the $800,000 to get out of a football game, a Title IX flap that may or may not have merit to go up against the other missteps Maturi made. Throw in bragging about your mega tongue where the whole world might see it, and I know which AD I would want. Also, it's interesting how a couple of big money guys now have let out that they might have not been too thrilled with Norwood. Might also explain stuck at 70 million. Odds are this might not be the first time Norwood acted like a pig in front of people he was aiming to get millions from. He got the low hanging fruit but his reputation and actions might have caused other people to decide no.

They need a mindset of finding the most impressive individual as their first criteria. Then everything else will fall into place. They go "fund raiser first" or "football man first" and they might regret it again.

Excellent summation. Don't disagree with a word.

Why would Mike Shanahan tell us how spectacular Tim Brewster was? No one in that situation is going to tell you anything bad about a former co-worker. It doesn't mean she's not a 'rock star'. She might be. But Brad Stevens' comment means nothing.

I guess for the same reason that Bud Grant recommended Les Steckel to replace himself in 1984. He was wrong about someone's potential.

I was reacting to the posts that were painting the Goetz hype as propaganda at best and conspiracy at worst. Stevens may be right, or he may be wrong, but he's not trying to deceive.
