Denny Sanford on next AD: "I hope they can find an equivalent as good as Joel Maturi"

per Shooter:

The university is still hoping to receive major contributions from TCF Bank, which has a $35 million, 25-year stadium naming rights deal with the Gophers; Burnsville-based Ames Construction, owned by Gophers mega-booster Dick Ames, and billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, a University of Minnesota grad who six years ago donated $6 million for a hall of fame inside the Gophers' on-campus stadium.

Sanford, who is a big fan of Kill, told the Pioneer Press on Saturday that he feels his alma mater "needs to get a proven guy from a significant system" to succeed Teague. He said he didn't have a specific recommendation, although he said, "I hope they can find an equivalent as good as Joel Maturi."

Sanford has been a supporter of the retired Maturi, who preceded Teague.

As for the possibility that Sanford will again contribute to his alma mater, he remains undecided.

Woody was obviously having some communication issues that did not involve text messages or too much alcohol. That said, Football and Basketball pay the bills. AD's like Maturi were great for the non-revenue sports, but went with the flow a little too much, happy to be bringing the revenue in, with the big rev. activities. He wasn't proactive or progressive. The U needs to move beyond that, but not do it in the way that has been done recently. If big-time boosters have an issue with that, then maybe they have not been paying attention to the college sports scene enough, when things have been getting done right, to know the difference.

Of course a South Dakota fan wants the gophers to hire someone like maturi

In sports - as in politics - if you are giving someone a major contribution/donation, you are more often than not going to expect something in return. T-Denny may be sending the U a clear message - if you want my money, you better hire someone I like as AD.

But, the fact he liked Maturi strongly suggests that he did not like Teague, so having Teague out of the picture may improve the U's chance of getting a donation from T-Denny.

Which is sad because Maturi didn't care about winning and Teague did.

T. Denny and Kill will likely want/agree to the same person.

T Denny is clearly not a football fan...

There's bigger fish then T.Denny on the corporate end. Maturi was an iron range hickster. Hiring Brewster and extending Pam Bortons contract were major gaffes.

Perhaps, T. Denny is saying that he wants someone with a little smoother personality. Not necessarily to have his arse kissed, but maybe just be recognized as someone who is potentially a key to the future.

Sanford's comments are more evidence that Joel is the best Gopher AD since Marsh Ryman retired in 1972. Some of us have been saying all along that Teague was failing miserably at his job and would be soon leaving one way or the other. As it happened, it turned out to be the other way.

You have to be kidding!!!!!!! Rick Bay, Mark Dienhart, Mac Boston and Paul Giel were head and shoulders above Maturi.

Not one AD on your list had a fraction of Maturi's accomplishments at the U. Giel, Boston, and Bay were failures, and Dienhart wasn't in the job long enough to do much of anything.

He also hired Kill. I love when people cherry pick out the bad and ignore the good.

The way I remember it, Kill was the best option that Fell into Maturi's lap when he was rebuffed by several of his first choices.

Seems to me T Denny wants some one that will suck up to him and someone he can control.

Please, no more Maturi types.

Unfortunate that Maturi will forever be remembered as the one that hired Tim Brewster, but he did some great things like combine the men's and women's athletic departments, getting the stadium done, and oversaw 2 revenue sport national championships.

Maturi not only got the new football stadium done. It turned out to be a masterpiece given the budget that was available for it. That doesn't happen by accident. Joel was the guy in charge of the design and construction and he deserves the large majority of the credit for it.

The way I remember it is that Maturi was pretty much the only one who thought Kill was the best option after he was turned down by the other coaches. Kill was a grand slam hire and Maturi gets 100% of the credit for it.

Not a Maturi fan, but this changes nothing - he was the one who hired Kill and deserves all the credit.

Why? What does TDS know about what makes a good AD and why should his opinion prove anything to me?

Tom Moe oversaw the merger of the men's and women's athletic programs. We also won five national championships under his watch. He had a huge impact for being on the job for only three years.

Maturi was the consummate bean counter. The way he handled Mason's contract and subsequent firing was one of the reasons he was tagged with the "MACturi" moniker.

Wasn't Tubby's extension the work of Maturi also, and Teague went along with what his predecessor set up?

Wasn't Maturi the one that extended Borton and decided not to announce it?

Yes, by all means, let's pile on Maturi while we're in the midst of finding out what a jacka*s pig his replacement was. It's a novel concept in today's world, but it is good to know character still does matter to some people. Maturi has it, obviously Woody not so much.
