Denny Sanford on next AD: "I hope they can find an equivalent as good as Joel Maturi"

per Shooter:

The university is still hoping to receive major contributions from TCF Bank, which has a $35 million, 25-year stadium naming rights deal with the Gophers; Burnsville-based Ames Construction, owned by Gophers mega-booster Dick Ames, and billionaire philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, a University of Minnesota grad who six years ago donated $6 million for a hall of fame inside the Gophers' on-campus stadium.

Sanford, who is a big fan of Kill, told the Pioneer Press on Saturday that he feels his alma mater "needs to get a proven guy from a significant system" to succeed Teague. He said he didn't have a specific recommendation, although he said, "I hope they can find an equivalent as good as Joel Maturi."

Sanford has been a supporter of the retired Maturi, who preceded Teague.

As for the possibility that Sanford will again contribute to his alma mater, he remains undecided.

How about a Joel Maturi hologram that can fool T. Denny just long enough to separate him from $50 million?

Translation - "I liked the old AD. I didn't like the new AD. If you want my money, you'd better hire someone more like the old AD."

For all of the anti-Maturi posters on here, the man clearly has his supporters - and some of those supporters have the ability to write big checks.

And, in all fairness, I suspect Denny is talking about "someone like Maturi" in terms of his personality and the way he deals with people. The more I read about Teague, the more obvious it becomes that he was not well-liked at the U, and was not well-liked by some of the big boosters. Dick Ames came out and said he might give MORE money now that Teague is gone.

May be someone that could make a hirer like Brewster. Then get lucky on a coach like Kill. Oh that was Joel.

Maturi picked Brewster over Charlie Strong.
Maturi also 'picked' Brady Hoke' over Kill.

Maturi also made a big fat boo boo hiring Tubby. Tubby's reputation was much much better than he was. What the KY posters said about Tubby all came true.

I've been as critical of Maturi as anyone on this board. Having said that, its not fair to blame Maturi's judgment for his bad hires and then attribute his good hires to luck. Maturi deserves all of the blame/credit for Brewster, Tubby, and Kill regardless of what you think about any of those three hires.

Coaching hires are hit and miss. It was the handling of the lead-up to those situations with Monson and Mason that was brutal. We'll never know how much of that was on Joel vs. Bruinicks, but it was poorly handled either way.

In any case, they still need to continue with the idea behind the Teague hire. A fund-raiser with big vision, and not a bean counter.
