Re: 3 Guard Lineup "I don't really wanna do that"....
I find that interesting. I guess depending on what you considered Austin Hollins a 2 or a 3? I always thought Pitino was recruiting PG, Wings with handles and Bigs, not 1, 2, 3, 4s and 5s. Wonder if that's a change in thought process having been in the B1G for 3 years or if it's my perception being incorrect.

Rick Barnes left Texas. One of his players said Barnes was negative all the time. The player said, "He told us if we didn't start playing better we were going to miss our team goals. It's tough to play with that kinda pressure." Too much honesty for kids is not good depending when it is and about what. The player went on to say how positive Shaka was ... (it's freaking summer time dude.) But if the perception is Barnes is negative and Shaka is positive because he has way more energy and enthusiasm, I think to some Pitino's style is going to erode confidence versus build it. Players are fragile. Negative does not work long term. jmo and yes, I still do like Pitino even though I criticize some things I'd like him to do differently.
The comment is about Pitino's love hate relationship with Carlos. He trusts him but he doesn't really. Pitino gives too much information and he's too honest. They're players, they all have confidence issues at some point no matter how good they are. And then comments like: "I joke with Carlos all the time...sure you're great now in the summer, but come November you're going to let me down." or "the real Carlos wll be back then" whatever the exact quote. And so and so is like Carlos without the bad shots...comments like that are fun but what happens is when things don't go well the player has doubts and fulfills the coaches prophesy. You don't want Carlos passing up shots...somebody has to score and it's easy to make a player hesitant. I don't think the negative jokes are good. Fun yes but to the player when he's searching his head for I can do this...well, no I can't...coach said I wasn't that good anyway. It's very hard to tape it back together. No, no I joke around all the time or whatever is true but not believed by some when they are not playing well. Gotta believe Mathieu's confidence had those kind of doubts. The honesty today: "Mathieu didn't play well as a senior and that's unusual." He's gone, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Be accountable: He didn't play well, because of the way you coached him.

I think the issue is Carlos is both slight and short for the "3" and if he's playing with Dorsey and Mason we are now undersized at arguably all 3 guard/wing spots (Maybe Dorsey at 6'0 isn't undersized at the point, but at minimum he's on the small side of "average"). If we had a guy like Randy Foye (who even played the 4 at times when Villanova was really small) who was short, but also very strong and explosive in our 3 guard lineup it wouldn't be as much of an issue.
I thought another interesting comment was when he said that if he has to red shirt someone than he didn't do a good enough job of recruiting. He expects all of the freshman to contribute depending upon how quickly they develop.

With 10 active players on the roster, he has little room for error and probably can't afford to redshirt anyone. If someone is redshirted this season, then that person must be significantly behind developmentally. The fact that he recruited two sit-out transfers and didn't make an attempt to replace Jarvis' position with an active player (like Lofton or someone else) shows that he feels comfortable treating this season as a developmental one. Why redshirt a player in a developmental season?
Lighten up a bit. You are being too critical and don't know the relationships. The players chose to come to The U because of Pitino and his staff, they already know his sense of humor. He is like his father in the how he talks about his players, not many have said that his dad is too negative. There are several players that mentioned the positive attitude of Pitino over a more negative former coach.

Obviously, there a ton of unknowns looking from far away and every coach has their own style. But looking at year two: EE unhappy and ineffective, Andre certainly didn't play like anybody thought he could...down or flat line from an injury season, Mathieu very disappointing compared to first year, McNeil washed out, Lofton washed out, Mo up, Joey up. Josh Martin got here and left. We'll see what the second year brings for the others. It's not overwhelmingly obvious to me his style is effective with players. He knows basketball! That's his visible strength...the x's and o's.
