per CBS:

SEC Media Days, you'll recall, were last week. But Missouri's Gary Pinkel apparently had a few more opinions on the College Football Playoff he'd forgotten to share in Hoover, Ala.

Speaking with ESPN on Monday while going through the network's "car wash," Pinkel dropped the following back-to-back takes, the second even hotter than the first:

i for one would welcome them in the B1G for the sole purpose of making the Hockey league bigger and better.
 


I think ND would be a great addition to the B1G, but who joins with them?
 

I would be happy to have ND in the B1G, but we'd have to add someone else and 16 teams is a little much.

How about we just kick Penn State out?
 




isn't the bigten full share $32M for the coming year? the NBC contract for ND is $15M - so it would grow to $33M?
for a million per year, say screw 'em?
 

No way they are going to accept getting money like B1G schools get. Having them join the league would also probably cause realignment which would likely make things worse.
I hope they join the ACC, they need a competent athletic school besides Duke that does not cheat.
 



I wouldn't mind if they kicked Rutgers out to get ND in but I absolutely do not want a 15 or 16 team Big Ten. I hate ND but a lot of that is because they think they are too good to join a conference. If they joined the Big Ten then most of that hate would go away. I do like how they fit the geographical footprint of the conference and it wouldn't to expand the Big Ten's brand.
 

I'm far from a ND fan, but that's a pretty stupid comment from Pinkel. Who cares if the NFL has independents or not?

Is there precedent for a good-standing member of a power 5 conference to just get the boot? (I have no idea... don't follow this stuff closely). If so, that would be kind of hilarious - as long as it's not us. :)
 

Notre Dame plays thee toughest schedule in the land, year after year after year. Joining a league, any league, would be a relative cakewalk.

Temple was kicked out of the Big East in 2004 due to sucking (I mean "poor attendance" and "lack of commitment to the program"). Any of the current schools getting kicked out of the Big Ten is a pipe dream and the idea's not worth the time it took someone to type it.
 

I'm certainly not expecting it. Just would be the only way that I wouldn't be opposed to adding a new school like ND. I do believe that if a school is a charter member like us than they can't get kicked out. Could be wrong though.

Strength of schedule for ND:
2014: Notre Dame #4 in the country. Top 10 also includes one Big Ten team.
2013: Not in top 10. Top 10 does include 2 Big Ten teams.
2012: Notre Dame #8. No Big Ten teams in top 10.
2011: Notre Dame not in top 10. 3 Big Ten teams in top 10 (including the Gophers)
2010: Notre Dame not in top 10.

So as you can see, they sometimes have a tough schedule, sometimes not. Certainly nothing out of the ordinary for a Big Ten team.
 

Thing is, part of ND's image has always been their status as an independent, allowing them to play 'national' games against top opponents. As noted, that can vary from year to year, but they do play generally strong teams like Michigan, Stanford, USC, etc.

If they join a conference, they do lose some of that 'national' status, and become "just another team." That could have an impact on recruiting, fund-raising, etc. Even with the new deal with the ACC, they're playing Texas, USC and Stanford this season.

I don't think ND will ever join a conference - unless they really hit the skids and lose their TV deal.
 

I disagree with the idea that only P5 teams should be in a playoff. If there are only 3 1-loss or unbeaten p5 team I would have no problem having an unbeaten non p5 team get in.

TCU, Utah, and Boise state have all proven that a good non p5 team can be good.
That's not always the case (see Hawaii, Cincinnati, northern Illinois), but we should not go into anything with the assumption it is the top 4 p5 schools. It is just the top 4 schools (which are almost always p5)
 


Notre Dame & Missouri will be my vote to make a 16 team B1G.

Agreed. The NFL doesn't have bowl games or marching bands either. I don't want college football to be like the NFL.

Important changes that will force NDs hand...B1G, Pac16, SEC all going to 9 game conference schedule and NCAA forcing P5 to not play down a level. So why schedule ND? No good comes from it and lots of bad.

Agree. The Big Ten isn't kicking out any teams.

I'd be down with this as well. However....I'm going to expand it by a couple teams that I also wouldn't mind seeing........if we expand again.

Nothing against Iowa State, but isn't the mindset of expansion these days to merely expand your TV/alumni footprint? Iowa State does nothing for that. Notre Dame would help. I would also love to see Missouri and that would also open up a new TV market. Missouri is a very doable road trip with a very nice campus.

Yeah and as a fan, I hate that the Big Ten is now becoming an east cost brand instead of sticking to it's roots and staying in the midwest. I know ISU wouldn't do anything in terms of TV revenue but they would be a natural rival for a lot of Big Ten schools.

It's too bad that it is all about the money. I agree that ISU would be a good addition otherwise. Everyone wants more top notch programs, the reality is that makes it even tougher for the Gophers to win the B1G.
