per the STrib:

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler called the academic progress in Gophers athletics “remarkable” at the Board of Regents meeting Wednesday and added that athletic director Norwood Teague had the department “clearly moving in the right direction.”

Teague used his annual athletics report to the regents to showcase the academic success and update the group on fundraising and the department’s gender-equity efforts.

Teague said the fundraising progress toward the $190 million “Athletics Village” remains at $70 million, but the school is “on the verge of solidifying” some large gifts. At least one of those gifts is expected to come from the local corporate community. Teague said that he has received a “very, very positive response from the list of corporations throughout the Twin Cities and Minnesota,” including one unnamed CEO he met with that morning.

“They know that we need to catch up,” Teague said. “We’ve done a good job of communicating where we are and what we need to do to get to where we want to be.”

Go Gophers!!

$190? Wasn't it adjusted to $150, or am I imagining things?

You are imaging things. The goal has always been $190, although the cost estimate concluded it could be built for ~$150. I'm sure they could find a way to spend the extra $40 mil if they get to $190.

Might be beneficial to fundraising if your men's basketball and football programs had won over 0 B10 titles since 1983. That's 0 for 66 with no end in sight.

Well sounds like I mistook that cost estimate for a change in the fundraising goal. Thanks.

The $150 million is just the academic center, basketball facilities and football facilities. The later $40 million is for olympic facilities including gymnastics and wrestling, renovations to existing facilities and underground parking which can all be added later.

Left out of this initial $150 million phase are plans for underground parking at the village and renovations to existing facilities. Now listed under “future phases” are plans to repurpose the existing Gibson-Nagurski football practice facility for Olympic sports, soccer, baseball, softball and golf. Werle said the university still has the same original goals of this project.

“The [fundraising] campaign is still $190 million, and that won’t change,” Werle said. “We’re finding ways to do things more economically and hopefully quicker.”

I stand corrected.

Speaking of Bronco Nagurski...

He was successful in many things, including the story about his gas station in downtown International Falls.

A visitor to the Canadian border town asked whether or not he was a successful gas station owner.

"Once someone gets gas from Bronko, they never go anyplace else," a local told him.

"Is the service good?" asked the visitor.

"No, not really," said the local.

"Does he have the best price?"

"Actually he is about three cents more expensive than everybody else in town."

"Then the gas must be better."

"No, it’s just the regular gas from Standard Oil."

"Then why does everyone keep coming back to Bronko?"

"Because when Bronko Nagurski puts your gas cap on, no one but Bronko Nagurski can get it back off."
