Sid Hartman: Gophers' Pitino gets $400K pay increase

Wins

Player development
Practice structure
Institutional control
Study habits of players
Grades and API
Management of assistant coaches
Public relations
Etc
etc

With respect to this raise, everyone is so g-darn focused on wins. Important, yes. But get over yourself if you think the other stuff doesn't matter when evaluating a coach after two years. Teague believed in Pitino, but underpaid slightly out of the gate. He's bumping him in salary because the program is coming around in the other areas. When more wins come, he'll get more bumps in pay and you all will probably complain again.

Lol I heard the same crap on here when kill got a raise after a couple years when u clowns were trying to run him out of town. There were a few of us who could see what a good coach looks like. Pitino is in the same category I am fine with the raise he is a talented recruiter and a solid coach. U don't keep changing coaches. It will be another tough year this year but there is good days coming.

Agreed. Would people be wringing their hands if Pitino would have been making 400k more on his initial contract? Nobody would have known or cared. If we have any indication that a coach can elevate the program.......raises should be regular. Especially if the coach in question is a potential candidate for other jobs year after year.

The same jokers that are bitching would complain if he left and started a winning tradition at another school. Heads up! He's still in the lower tier when it comes to coaching salaries.

In my time as a Gopher fan, I've seen the following coaches put winning teams on the court - Bill Musselman, Jim Dutcher, Clem Haskins, and Tubby Smith. Even the often-maligned Dan Monson had a season where he went 21-11, 10-6 in the B1G and went to the NCAA tournament.

Again - I do NOT hate Pitino - I think he could very well turn into a quality coach. but "dramatic improvements" in the program? Pitino has been Gopher coach for 2 seasons. His first season was very promising. his 2nd season was - at the very least - somewhat disappointing. The next few years will be the real test, when he has a full chance to implement his system with his own recruits. If I like what I see, I'll say so. If I don't like what I see, I'll say so. If I had to give Pitino a grade right now, it would be "Incomplete," because I don't feel I have seen enough to render a final verdict.

You and I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. I will guarantee you this; if you sat down with the AD and he/she were able to tell you what actually is going on...........you would reply with "Oh, I didn't realize that."

Judging without knowing all the facts is not a good thing.

Suppose you're an AD whose ridiculous plan continues to crumble down... yes, you may break ground this fall on something short of greatness and the original plan, but you're feeling the heat. You desperately want to keep your new bball coach.. so months ago you give him the deal... just keep it quiet for several months...

Man, were you drunk when wrote this post. None makes sense. You all should have stayed from this topic. Big boys such as bga1, Tiny, Jamloo and ....did. They know something was wrong with this move by NT so they were smart and stayed quite. You should follow them.

I say I have not made up my mind -and you say I am "judging without knowing all the facts." What the bleep am I judging?

But, you bring up a good point. If there are things going on behind the scenes that influenced the pay-raise decision, then all NT has to do is SAY SO! NT could have come out and said "we feel the salary increase is deserved because Coach Pitino has made the following improvements to the program: xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx and so forth." That would send a strong message that Pitino is moving the program forward. Gee, do you think that would play well with prospective recruits and donors?

in my opinion - and yes, we are all expressing opinions here - this is another situation that NT did not handle as well as he could have from a public relations standpoint. NT really needs to get some advice from a PR professional (Dave Mona, maybe) on how to do a better job of getting his message out to the fans, boosters and public.

Mr Teague does not owe it to you to explain all the reasons he used to make his decision. He's hired and paid to make those decisions...........not to consult with you.

'What's going on behind the scenes' is not necessarily hiding something. Do you really think the AD(or and mgr) has the time to explain to you everything he has observed and learned about the coach and program. That is not their job.

Your quote:
"To be clear - if the Gophers go out next year, win 20+ games, make the NCAA - essentially exceed all (or most) expectations - I would have NO problem with Pitino getting a salary bump. I just think that a raise should be earned, not given out automatically."

You're saying you don't agree with the raise. You also say you haven't seen enough.(bold)

Ok, so now you make up some other think to criticize NT about, not responding to your bitching! What planet are you from and who made you king there?

6-12 conference record, no post season, and Munson like recruiting does not justify a 400k raise. Case closed.

Imagine how high it would have been if he had actually made the NCAA tournament......or even the NIT.

+100 6-12 conference record, no post season, and Munson like recruiting does not justify a 400k raise. Case closed.

For the record, I have no opinion about Pitino's raise. I was trying to show there are other things at play when evaluating a young coach (one of the youngest) besides wins. Contracts are complicated.

Others have said it better. You don't have to agree with the raise, but don't try to oversimplify it. I think there are people that would actually prefer if Pitino's salary was directly tied to some sort of "Win-O-Meter" in Teague's office. Great long-term vision, people... Would love to work for one of you guys...

You people are making a big deal out of nothing. This isn't an extension or a buyout increase. It's a small "good will" bump in pay in light of the fact that we got him at a bargain price, he continues to be in demand (to at least some degree), and the market continues to rise. Tim Miles just got a lucrative contract extension coming off a 5-13 season at Nebraska.

Exactly.
