Bobby Jackson is up there and had a nice NBA career. I'm blanking on others that would be in the top 5 or 10.

Did Vincent Grier come from a JUCO? I know he started at UNC-Charlotte but can't remember after that.

There's also Jerry Holman.

Ray Williams, Grier, I thought John Wiley fit well on a very good team. Bill Musselman built his first team with JUCOS. Behagen, Turner, and Nix.

Bobby is definitely the best JUCO of all time for the Gophers, and could be considered one of the best all time in Big Ten history, especially if you consider he was the first player ever to win Big Ten POY of Defensive POY in the same season.

Other great Gopher JUCO transfers:

Ray Williams - a legend!
Al Nuness
Clyde Turner
Vincent Grier (fantastic first year with the U)
Travarus Bennett
Trevor Mbakwe
Ron Behagen
Ollie Shannon
Dick Garmaker
Kevin Clark

Go Gophers!!

Grier and Paul Carter are my two favorites. But I've only been a Gopher fan since 2003-2004 (when I was accepted in HS).

I don't know about the definitely. Both really good players but Ray averaged 18.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg for his two years.
The 76, 77 team that Ray was a part of was 24 and 3. Bobby averaged 15.3 and 6.1. I'd give the edge to Ray. But,
Big Ten champs and Final 4 is pretty hard to argue with.

I'm hereby retroactively making you a fan of Bobby Jackson. He was a magnificent player and the greatest Gopher I've seen in the nearly 30 years I've been a fan of the program. To me, this list begins and ends with him.

I really liked him with the Kings. So I'm sure I would have loved him with the Gophs.

Jackson is hands down the best JUCO to come through here.

Not the best, but one of my favs was J'son Stamper

Good call on Travarus Bennett. A very underrated Gopher player, jack of all trades.

Dennis Shaffer led the 73-74 team in scoring. Very good shooting guard.

Schaefer was about all the team had going that year. I remember him pouring in points in quite a few games.

Same timeframe here. Vincent Grier's game against whisky will go down top 3 all time favorite gopher games of my life. Can't forget about Zach Puchtel (not sure if name is spelled correctly), big effort player.

Did you ever see Ray Williams play? It's not definitely. His team may have won the Natl Championship had they been eligible. I love Bobby Jackson, and was way too young to say Ray was better, but there could be arguments made for each.

I agree. Bobby Jackson is the most clutch Gopher I've ever seen, but I doubt we've ever had a player that's hands down better than Ray Williams.

Roland Brooks, one of the best dunkers of all time, never gets respect on these JUCO threads!!

Bobby Jackson was awesome but I have to go with Ray Williams.

Ray had a much better supporting cast and averaged more points than Bobby. I'd go with Ray!

Zach Puchtel??? I didn't know Harvard was a juco.

Ray Williams was a tremendous talent. I also liked Mark Landsberger.

Also the two teams had different styles of play. You can make the point for either but there's no slam dunk either way.

Bobby's supporting cast wasn't bad. 4 other guys (Trevor Winter, John Thomas, Sam Jacobson and Quincy Lewis) had NBA run, not to mention Courtney James and Eric Harris.

I forgot all about Landsberger. This thread is bringing on nostalgia. GOPHER BASKETBALL BE THERE!!!! It makes my mentioning John Wiley kind of weak, but we had a hole and I thought Coach Dutcher did a good job filling that hole. The best ever of filing a hole was bringing in Tommy Davis.

None of those guys are considered worthy of the top 50 players of all time like McHale and Thompson was the number one pick his draft year. Not even comparable in m opinion.

Never said they were as good or better. Just said they weren't bad. Not too many teams have that type of depth of talent.

With Osborne Lockhart and Flip to finish off the line-up. Hell of a team.
