The thing is, if they turn down the CBI, the last memory anyone has of the Gophers this season is losing in the 2nd rnd of the B1G tournament, then missing the NCAA and the NIT. I could see that being a tough sell for recruits. Unless a kid's #1 priority is playing time, I'm not sure what Pitino's sales pitch is right now. He can't sell tradition - he can't sell recent success - he can't sell facilities. About all he has is "come in and help us turn things around, and get lots of playing time right away." I can see that working for a few kids, but a lot of kids want to go to a winning program.
There's no two ways about it - this program took a step backwards this season, and unless Pitino can find a way to really upgrade the talent level in a hurry, it could be a while until they're really competitive again in the conference.
