I know Pitino said there was no way he'd take a CBI invite, but that was before it was official that we weren't in the NIT. Now that the reality is that if we don't go CBI, our season is over, will he take it? Would you like to see us take it?
 

I would like to see them get a couple more games, but reality is more then likely it's over.

Based on the way the team finished the season, I think they were all ready for it to end. I don't think they will pursue a CBI tournament.
 

Too much recruiting to do with all these scholarships open. Not making the NIT plays into the coaches' hand. No chance they'd accept a CBI bid. I made a case for them doing so a few days ago, and I think they might if the 2014 class were filled, but it's not.
 

GHole has better things to talk about than CBI matchup. Such as who is going to replace Pitino after he takes the Bama job.
 


My guess is no he won't take it and no I wouldn't want him to take it either. Time to fully turn the attention to next year and that starts with filling the open scholarships with players who can help us win next year.

Agreed. National Junior College Championship starts tomorrow.
 





The thing is, if they turn down the CBI, the last memory anyone has of the Gophers this season is losing in the 2nd rnd of the B1G tournament, then missing the NCAA and the NIT. I could see that being a tough sell for recruits. Unless a kid's #1 priority is playing time, I'm not sure what Pitino's sales pitch is right now. He can't sell tradition - he can't sell recent success - he can't sell facilities. About all he has is "come in and help us turn things around, and get lots of playing time right away." I can see that working for a few kids, but a lot of kids want to go to a winning program.

There's no two ways about it - this program took a step backwards this season, and unless Pitino can find a way to really upgrade the talent level in a hurry, it could be a while until they're really competitive again in the conference.

You're absolutely right, but going to the CBI would prevent him from hurrying to upgrade talent at a critical point in time. The national junior college tournament starts tomorrow and I would be surprised if Pitino and at least one other coach weren't there. It was an unsatisfying year for sure but there were numerous power conference teams that had worse years this season.

Are any Big Ten teams in the NIT or CBI, I didn't see any.
 



Colorado was the only Power Five team to accept a CBI bid this season. Oregon State, Florida State and Cal all publicly turned down bids, and assuredly they are not the only power conference teams to have declined an invite, but others do so privately. Pretty bloody underwhelming, and you have to wonder at this rate how long the CBI can even survive.
 

The media was already pre-mocking the NIT. Had the Gophers accepted a CBI invitation, I think they would mock the CBI at least as much. Perhaps it is best just to pull the plug on the season.
