per the Baltimore Sun:

The Big Ten has issued a public reprimand of Penn State men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers for his postgame comments about the officiating in Maryland's 76-73 win over the Nittany Lions on Saturday night.

The conference has also fined the school $10,000.

Chambers was critical of the fact that Terps freshman Melo Trimble earned 12 free throws in the game, while his star senior D.J. Newbill went to the line fewer times.

"It makes no sense," Chambers said. "And if I didn't complain, Newbill would have never got to the foul line. Because Trimble gets there 12 times, and he's a freshman, and he's on the road. It's a joke. It's a joke the way we're officiated. It's disappointing."

Go Gophers!!

No comment from the B1G regarding how a Penn State player was pulled down, and the Maryland player was awarded free throws for it. Interesting.

Reminds me of the time Damon Bailey runs right through the lane and into Robert Traylor - and Traylor gets the foul and fouls out. It's what the ref thinks he saw out of the corner of his eye. There's no way these things get called the way they do if the official is actually looking at it.

Good for Chambers. Money well spent. That was an awful call that directly impacted the outcome of the game.

On the down side, we still have to play Chambers at the end of the season, so maybe Penn State will start getting some crucial calls to appease him? Human nature response by the zebras?

Sure. We will get hosed on our own court.

if they shoot 56% 3PTs then we might be better off on foul calls inside the arc before they pass it out for the three. Oh wait, you have to rebound a missed FT. hosed either way

Funny how they just gave back millions for the coverup scandal and then fined the school 10k for simply stating a fact.
Referees are worse then they have ever been.

The baby boomer refs are getting older, but they aren't getting faster.

No comments by Deadspin on how horrible the call was, though. I hope the B1G eventually publicly reprimands the referee. It was one of the most eggregious bad calls I've seen in a long time and in a crucial place in the game. The worst part was not missing the call, but rewarding the Maryland guy for a dirty play. The player should get suspended for pulling the other guy down.

West coast refs may be the worst, but the B1G has to be second worst in the country.

The NCAA will probably forgive them and give them extra scholarships.
