Less than a month away from Early National Signing Day, the Gophers were not done building their 2023 recruiting class. Pearland, Texas defensive tackle Theorin Randle committed late Sunday night. Listed as a top-1,400 prospect according to 247sports, Randle chose Minnesota over top offers from Memphis, Tulane, and Washington State. Listed at 6-foot-1, 282 pounds he is the third defensive lineman to join the class.

Who is Theorin Randle?:
Theorin Randle is a senior student-athlete at Shadow Creek High School in Pearland, Texas. Pearland is one of the bigger cities in the Houston metropolitan era (~125,000 people) and Shadow Creek is one of the bigger high schools (~2,750 students). Randle had a very productive senior football campaign, totaling 43 total tackles, 11 TFLs, and five sacks from the defensive line. While he’s not impressing on the gridiron, he is a very impressive Track & Field athlete, where he threw a 47-4 shot put and a 168-6 discus in July 2022 at the AAU Junior Olympics Region 17 National Qualifier.
Randle had committed to Washington State on July 6 this last summer. After de-committing in late October and visiting Minnesota in November, the marriage seemed to make sense and he verbally committed to the Maroon & Gold.
- Scouting Report:
Listed at 6-foot-1, 280 pounds Randle is a relatively undersized defensive lineman for the Big Ten level. As a senior at Shadow Creek High School, he showed the versatility to play on the outside and inside but certainly projects as an interior player at the next level. Playing at a big level of high school football in Texas, he showed that he is more than capable of developing into a Big Ten contributor. With being said, he is a developmental prospect. It will likely not happen in the first two if not three seasons with the program, but current DLine coach Brick Haley has a fun slab of clay to mold.

Instant Reaction:
After LB Tre Tre McCutchin and WR Tyler Brown verbally de-committed from the program earlier this season, it made sense for the Gophers to look and add to their 2023 class. With only six of the 16 players on the defensive side of the ball, adding another defender seemed like a smart way to go. I will be the first to admit, Theorin Randle will likely not have much of an impact on the Gophers program for at least three years. With that being said, it is never a bad thing to add more bodies to the fold and use up your scholarships. There is no reason why Randle cannot be a productive player at this level, and he should have a bright future ahead of himself.
What is next?:
Early National Signing Day is December 21, only 27 days away. The Gophers currently have 17 scholarship commitments and their class ranks No. 42 in the country according to 247sports. There is always a chance of adding a handful of players before signing day, but this will likely be the class we see the Gophers finish with. One that started with so much promise, has seemed to die off near the end.
