A massive weekend of recruiting for the Gophers ended with a bang.  6-foot-4 DL Hayden Schwartz committed to the Gophers over a plethora of other high-level offers. After originally committing to Nebraska on Oct. 18, Schwartz chose the Maroon & Gold over Michigan, Penn State, Miami (FL), Missouri and Stanford, among others. Ranking as the No. 640 player in the country, Schwartz is the fourth highest-ranked recruit in the Gophers’ 2022 class.

At 6-foot-4, 244-pounds, Schwartz lined up at DE, OLB and TE as a senior. 244 pounds is a bit undersized for a Big Ten defensive end, but playing at a high level of high school football in Florida didn’t look like it bothered him. His physical strength consistently shows up on film, dominating opposing offensive lineman, but he still has a way to go with his pass-rushing moves, like most people his age. After watching a little bit of his film, you can quickly notice why so many big programs were after him. Once Schwartz adds on 30 more pounds of muscle has the potential to be a big-time player in the Big Ten.

Hayden Schwartz is a big-time recruit and the Gophers just beat out some of the best programs in the Big Ten for his services. With his addition, they now have an ELITE defensive line class, with four-stars Trey Bixby and Anthony Smith and his three-star teammate Jack Pyburn. With two big-time DL recruits now in the transfer portal, P.J. Fleck and Chad Wilt went to work completely reloading their defensive front with elite talent. Landing Schwartz is the type of recruiting win that sends a message nationally. He is Minnesota’s fifth 2022 player from the state of Florida, proving that the Gophers are here on a national scale and they’re here to stay.

What is next?:

After a massive recruiting day for Minnesota, the Gophers’ 2022 class ranks No. 36 nationally. As a whole, their 19 recruits are making a very well-rounded class with serious help at positions that need it. With National Signing Day quickly approaching on Wednesday, Dec. 15 I would imagine that the Gophers are far from over constructing their 2022 class, and hopefully Sunday was just the start.
