All Things 2024 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

What's going on with Duran? He's been getting slapped around this past week.

That splitter on the homerun he gave up was 95.4 mph. Last year that pitch averaged 98.4.

he's not right. something is still funky from his time on the IL to start the season. they might be better off shutting him down for as long as it takes to get him right. if there is a physical reason for the drop in velocity - elbow, shoulder, whatever, the time to find it is now.

The bullpen cart needs to be in every stadium. Should be required.

was checking out Twins Daily and Ted Tollefson had a system-wide injury update. So, take this FWIW:

Josh Winder - currently on rehab w/Saints, but with an ERA of 9.35.....
Zach Weiss - on 60-day IL. could begin rehab assignment in mid-June
Royce Lewis - could begin rehab after Memorial Day
Justin Topa - not likely to return until after All-Star break, if then.
Brock Stewart - not throwing yet - mid-June or later looks likely
Jair Camargo - out since May 1 with forearm injury. no time frame given for return
Brooks Lee - rehabbing at FCL; will work his way back up to St. Paul
Matt Canterino - (AAA) could start rehab by early June (has not pitched in a game since July, 2022....)
Jeff Brigham - (AAA) on IL since April 6 with oblique strain
Brent Headrick - (AAA) on 60-day IL - best-case scenario, returns by July or August
Cory Lewis (AA) - On IL since start of season with shoulder injury - no recent update

other minor-leaguers of note
Gabriel Gonzalez (A+) - out since May 8 with back injury. expected back soon
Connor Prielipp - recovering from modified tommy John surgery - may resume baseball activities in June or July
Walker Jenkins - rehabbing in FCL

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred had a news conference Thursday after an owners meeting. a few notes:

On 'robot' umpires: looks like robot umps will not be used next season.

'We still have some technical issues,'' baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. ''We haven't made as much progress in the minor leagues this year as we sort of hoped at this point. I think it's becoming more and more likely that this will not be a go for '25.''

''There's a growing consensus in large part based on what we're hearing from players that the challenge form should be the form of ABS if and when we bring it to the big leagues, at least as a starting point,'' Manfred said. ''I think that's a good decision.''

on TV issues:

'If I were a betting man, I think that Diamond continues to operate and pay our teams through the '24 season,'' Manfred said.

Manfred said there are two issues: whether MLB should take control of local rights from clubs and if that occurs, how to distribute revenue to clubs.

''For it to have any steam, the conversation about nationalization, I think it's dependent on getting in the relatively short term some body of rights: 14, 15, 16, 17 clubs, and you'd start down the path from there,'' Manfred said. "I'm not so naive as to believe two weeks from tomorrow I'm going to have all 30.''

offense in baseball:

per-game averages to date for 2024 -- strikeouts are at 8.38 per team, down from 8.61 last year. but the overall batting average is .240, down from .248 last year. at that pace, it would be the lowest average batting average since 1968, aka "The Year of the Pitcher." (for younger posters - pitching dominated the game in '68 to the point where rule changes were made, including lowering the height of the pitcher's mound.)

The big news for the farm system on Friday was that Twins star Royce Lewis would be joining the St. Paul Saints on Saturday to kick off a rehab assignment, Wichita starter Marco Raya twirled a gem though, and recently signed prospect Kevin Maitan went yard for a big one with the Kernels. Check in to all of the action here.

Kiriloff goes deep. Twins take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 8th

They are either very good or awful. Consistently above average might yet get them into the playoffs.

Pretty big 4 game series with the Royals this coming week. KC is good (Twin killer Perez is having a great season) but they’ve only played 15 games against teams with a winning record.

Time for us to step up against Bobby and The Boys

saw this in a tweet from Aaron Gleeman (The Athletic)

since replacing Louie Varland with Simeon Woods-Richardson, the Twins' rotation has a 3.62 ERA in 31 starts with the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in MLB. The Twins have a league-best 21-10 record during that time.

and this tweet:
Twins starting pitchers have walked 9 of 283 batters (3%) over the last 14 days, best in MLB. League average is 7%. Twins lead the league with a K to BB ratio of 7.2/gm.

It would be nice if Cleveland and KC would lose once in a while...

Twins Minor League Report (5/25): Royce Returns for Rehab, Festa Dominates in Buffalo

In his 10th major league game, Twins first baseman Tom Kelly hit his only MLB home run off Vern Ruhle at Tiger Stadium on this date in 1975.

Ruhle—who shares a 1975 Topps rookie card with 1971 Edina graduate Paul Siebert—makes another appearance in the annals of Twins history, giving up a home run to Dave McKay in his first major league plate appearance on August 22, 1975.

Seems like Brooks kept his hitting stroke while on injured list. Would expect him in St. Paul soon and maybe on the big club after all-star break. Either someone will get hurt or they cut bait with Farmer.
Surprised to see they let Lewis steal a base. Not sure I personally would push it so soon. Anyway, who goes down when he's ready? Miranda? Julien? The aformentioned Farmer? Some decisions to make.

Miranda deserves to stay up at this point. Julien hasn't been good.
But Lewis is a righty and they just can't get enough of those platoons, so I'd guess Miranda goes.

And after I typed this, I noticed that Julien has finally been demoted out of his usual leadoff spot vs. a RHP, all the way down to 8th, so that might be a sign that they are running low on patience there.

I hope so. Most of us are.

Miguel Sanó accidentally burned his knee because he left a heating pad on too long, Ron Washington said. It’s not considered serious but it’s a setback.

What's up with Lopez. Been hit hard last 3 or 4 starts it seems.

The possibility exists that the real winner of the Lopez-Arraez trade ends up being San Diego.
Nah. Lopez still has good peripheral numbers, and it's more a case of bad luck than anything. He's still a legit #1/#2 starter in a league where those are next-to-impossible to get in a trade or in FA outside of the few big, big money teams.

Arraez is a homeless man's version of Tony Gwynn who is completely useless on defense.

Arraez somehow has 1.0 WAR while batting .335. I don't even know how that's possible.

He has the same number of XBH as Alex Kirilloff, who is batting .214.
You are 100% correct in this comment and your previous post but 90% of GH won’t be able to grasp these concepts.
