Western Michigan graduate transfer Brandon Johnson chooses the Gophers

Richard Pitino and his staff continue to make big moves on the spring recruiting trail. The Gophers received a commitment from Western Michigan graduate transfer Brandon Johnson on Thursday. He is immediately eligible for next season.

Johnson, an All-MAC Third Team selection, averaged 15.4 points and 8.1 rebounds last season. The power forward finished his Western Michigan career with 1,016 points and posted six double-doubles last season. He stood out on the defensive end and led the Broncos with 31 blocks and 258 rebounds in 2019. Johnson also snatched 15 steals and made an impact around the rim.

The Gophers entered this recruiting cycle in search of frontcourt help and left with two excellent transfers. Center Liam Robbins hasn’t reached his complete potential yet and Johnson has the skills necessary to make a big impact. Minnesota is waiting to learn whether Robbins will earn immediate eligibility. However, no matter what, the program filled its open recruiting slots with two high-caliber players.

Here’s a highlight reel from his sophomore season:
