20 days since the last commitment, Minnesota added 2023 QB Drew Viotto to their 2023 recruiting class. Viotto, a 6-foot-4 prospect from Walled Lake, Michigan held top offers from Maryland, Syracuse and Eastern Michigan. After originally committing to Eastern Michigan, he de-commited and joined the Gophers two days after receiving an offer. Listed as the No. 57 ranked QB in the country and No. 20 player in Michigan according to 247sports, Viotto now joins Walled Lake Western High School teammate Darius Taylor (RB/WR) as verbal commitments for Minnesota.

Who is Drew Viotto?:
Drew Viotto is a student-athlete at Walled Lake Western High School in Walled Lake, Michigan. Originally from Sault St. Marie, Canada he moved to Michigan for high school. Last season as a junior he threw for 2,126 yards and 22 touchdowns while completing 70-percent of his passes. It was Viotto’s first as a full-time varsity starter after sitting behind Zach Trainor who eventually committed to Eastern Illinois. He has quickly developed into one of the best players in Michigan and will look to build on that heading into his senior season.
- Scouting Report:
Viotto is a pocket passer in every sense of the phrase, but don’t take that as him being immobile. At 6-foot-4, he has the athleticism to effectively move around the pocket and use his legs, he just doesn’t get out and run often. He is a very natural thrower with nice touch for someone his size. He has terrific arm talent and strength making him a tantalizing long-term prospect.
**High School Football Hudl Highlights:
Instant Reaction:
Drew Viotto is the Gophers’ first QB commitment since OC Kirk Ciarroca returned to the team. Since Coach Fleck took over, he would be the team’s fourth-highest ranked QB recruit. After watching his high school tape, I really don’t know why he is not rated higher. He has elite size for his position and really impressive arm talent for someone his age. Like most high school quarterbacks there is definitely room for refinement in his game, but his long-term potential is very intriguing. With highly touted recruits Athan Kaliakmanis and Jacob Knuth looking like the future at the position, Viotto will have to really impress to see time early in his Gophers career, but he adds another very talented body to the QB room.
What is next?:
With the addition of Viotto, the Gophers currently have the No. 18 rated 2023 recruiting class according to 247sports. No with eight verbal commitments, they’re 10 short of last year’s total of 18. Viotto’s commitment now gives Minnesota three very talented young QBs behind Cole Kramer for the 2023 season, alongside Kaliakmanis and Knuth. With only two commitments on the defensive side of the ball, I would look out for the Gophers to attack that going forward in the recruiting process.
