Lamb, Mittelstadt, and Thomas Named Captains for 2025-26 Gopher Hockey Season

The University of Minnesota men’s hockey program has announced its captains for the 2025-26 season, and the “C” and “A’s” will be worn by a trio of seniors who know the Maroon and Gold tradition well. Head coach Bob Motzko confirmed that forward Brody Lamb, defenseman Luke Mittelstadt, and defenseman Cal Thomas will lead the Gophers into the program’s 105th season.

Leadership on the ice has always been a cornerstone of Gopher hockey, and this year’s group is stepping into a role that connects them to some of the most celebrated names in school history. The announcement comes after another successful year for the program: Minnesota captured its seventh Big Ten regular season title—a league record—and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year, finishing with a 25-11-4 record.

Brody Lamb – The Scoring Threat

Lamb returns as Minnesota’s top returning scorer, coming off his best season yet in 2024-25. The Byron, Minn. native racked up 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points, good for sixth on the team. His ability to strike on the power play was a difference-maker; Lamb scored eight man-advantage goals, ranking among the nation’s top 10. Perhaps most importantly, the Gophers were 15-2-2 when Lamb found the scoresheet. Known for his quick release and clutch performances, Lamb has also been recognized as a Big Ten Star of the Week four times across his career and has already suited up in 117 games for the Maroon and Gold.

Luke Mittelstadt – The Steady Blue Liner

On the back end, Mittelstadt proved last season that he can deliver both defensively and offensively. He posted 18 points (two goals, 16 assists), including 13 helpers in conference play. The Eden Prairie product earned the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award for his efforts, a testament to his consistency and team-first approach. Mittelstadt was a plus-23 last season—his career best—and owns a sparkling career plus/minus of plus-56 through 116 games. His steady play on the blue line provides a critical balance of shutdown defense and offensive support.

Cal Thomas – The Returning Voice

Thomas, from Maple Grove, is no stranger to leadership. After wearing an “A” last season, he steps into an expanded role as a senior captain. Known for his toughness and shot-blocking ability, Thomas has 157 career blocks across 105 games. Despite battling injuries early last season, he contributed nine points (one goal, eight assists) and was part of a perfect 8-0 record when he registered a point. His experience and resilience make him a natural leader for a defensive corps that will once again be counted on to carry heavy minutes.

Looking Ahead

Minnesota fans won’t have to wait long to see their new captains in action. The Gophers open the 2025-26 campaign with a home series against Michigan Tech on Oct. 3-4 at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Season and single-game tickets are available now at GopherSports.com.

With Lamb, Mittelstadt, and Thomas wearing the letters, the Gophers will look to add another banner to the rafters while chasing the program’s ultimate goal: a return trip to the Frozen Four and a shot at national championship glory.
