Jeff Horton’s Press Conference Notes – Gives good reason not to play Gray, we’re too thin

Gopher Football

“¢ It’s a crazy week even though it’s only Tuesday with everything going on in the Twin Cities

“¢ OSU dominated us in all areas

“¢ The further we got behind, we got sloppy and showed that we just couldn’t keep up

“¢ The sloppy play disappoints me more than anything. There’s no excuse in the special teams for that to happen

“¢ We started well that game ““ we only had 5 plays in the 1st quarter, in the 2nd quarter we drove it down well but miss the field goal. We need to take advantage of every opportunity we get

“¢ I felt pretty good at 17-7, but we couldn’t get out of the half quick enough.

“¢ MSU is a big, physical football team, they have the best path to the Rose Bowl. They’re coming off a loss to Iowa, but they will be prepare. They ran into a buzzsaw at Iowa, and Iowa jumped on them early. Coach Dantonio has done a great job, he’ll have them refocused and re-charged

“¢ They’re balanced and run and pass the ball very well. Baker and Bell are a double headed monster. They’re big and strong upfront

“¢ Defensively, they have the best linebacker in the country in Jones. Rucker came back in and play last week. They blitz over 50 % of the time. We need to prepare for that.

“¢ We need to respond, we need to circle up, we need to regroup and refocus. Losing all of these games in a role is not fun, it’s not easy.

“¢ Matt Carufel is very doubtful, Dom Alford is doubtful, we left with Ryann Wynn backing them up.

“¢ KGM will start, suspended Brandon Kirksey for one game, I like what he brings to the practice and game, but there’s a right way and
a wrong way to do that. He let us down. We talked about it, and it’s handled, no practice issues. I love that kid and what he brings

“¢ Hageman and Carter are not on the depth chart, need to focus on academics, they will be out the rest of the season

“¢ Matt Carufel should be back this year, had an MRI

“¢ Hoese will not be back this week, hoping to get him back next week

“¢ Alford had tweaked a little bit his leg

“¢ MSU is a team that had a lot of adversity, discipline problems and other issues, they got that corrected and are moving in the right direction. They’ve stayed together and made a nice commitment in the offseason. They always look good, they look like an NFL team when they get off the bus

“¢ We can’t get any thinner ““ don’t want to pull a lineman that we’re redshirting. Chance for Ryan Orton to step up. Ed Olson will be back this week.

“¢ Wynn has played just about every position here, he’s a smart guy and an engineering major

“¢ Tiree Euree ““ got pulled down by his hair, I thought it was a horse call. Good to see him step up, there will probably be a bigger role for him this week.

“¢ You wish you could redshirt junior college players for a year, but it’s still a big step, it’s no different than a freshman coming out of high school

“¢ How can you run against their front 7 ““ Horton joked a few hail Mary’s

“¢ With how thin you’ve been in the secondary, how confident are you. We feel comfortable with the guys out there. All of their receivers

“¢ Asked about why he isn’t playing Gray at QB, as most fans look at this season as a wash? A lot of people listen to this presser,I get a lot of emails after this. I think it’s a couple different things. You can go over our depth chart. People tell me to play the younger guys, but we are. We’re playing all the backs we got, all the TE’s, lineman, WR’s, and in defense we play everyone we have. You can put a guy in, with Gray, he practices so much as the receiver. They were blitzing like crazy, and I didn’t want to throw Gray into that situation where he wasn’t ready and could get hurt . It’s easier said than done to tell him to get more snaps in the week. We’ll continue to look at that where we’re at number wise, if we take him out, we won’t have anyone to replace him.

“¢ There’s not a coach here that’s not frustrated or feels good about losing.
