The Gophers have officially hired Cincinnati assistant coach Chad Wilt. He will replace defensive line coach Jim Panagos, who was hired by Rutgers last month.
Pete Thamel reported Wednesday night that Minnesota was nearing a deal with Wilt. The school confirmed the hire Thursday afternoon.
Wilt served as Cincinnati’s defensive line coach for one season (2019). He has nearly 20 years of coaching experience, including notable stops at Army West Point (2016-18), Maryland (2014-15), Ball State (2011-13), Richmond (2010) and Virginia (2009).
Last season, Cincinnati ranked No. 32 in front seven havoc (14.3%), according to College Football Data. Havoc rate is calculated by adding tackles for loss, pass breakups, interceptions and forced fumbles. The sum of those variables is divided by total plays. The Bearcats also finished No. 27 in defensive EPA (0.074).
While working under Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, Wilt gained experience in a scheme that featured multiple looks, including a 3-3-5, 3-4 and 4-3. At Army West Point, Wilt coached defensive linemen in a hybrid-style 3-4 scheme that featured a rush end. He has experience in multiple different systems, which is beneficial for the Gophers’ defensive line.
