Gopher Basketball
After getting off to a quick lead after some early hot shooting from Jamal Abu Shamala and Adam Boone, the Gophers failed to stop the Bearcats in transition multiple times and often left a guy wide open down low in half court sets as they went on a 15-3 run leading to a commanding 39-29 halftime lead for the Bearcats.
The second half was never in doubt. The Gophers cut the lead to seven points, but Cincinnati immediately put it back up to double digits as Minnesota failed to string a few defensive stops together and never got into an offensive rhythm ““ two consistent themes for the season. The Bearcats were led by Eric Hicks who finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds as they cruised to the 14-point win.
The loss ends what has been a very disappointing season for the Gopher program. After advancing to the NCAA Tournament last year, the Gophers hoped to build on that success with its senior dominated team that had a combined 15 years of experience by its top three scorers. But the team was never able to capture the grit, heart and defensive identity of the 2004-05 season, and with those voids unfilled, the Gophers finish a disappointing 16-15.
The Gophers now enter a crucial off-season as three sophomores who had inconsistent roles this year will be looked on to provide immediate leadership both on and off the court as the program will have no seniors next year. In addition, a few pieces of the puzzle are yet to be determined as the Gopher coaching staff remains increasingly intent on bringing in a junior college player or two for the 2006-07 season.
But until then, thanks to the five seniors for your commitment to the University of Minnesota ““ best of luck in all your future endeavors.
