College Football Roundup (10/9/06)

Gopher Football

There were some major shakeups in the polls this week, with none bigger than #2 Auburn losing to previously unranked Arkansas. After eeking out a win against South Carolina last week, Auburn saw it’s luck run out agains the Razorbacks. Speaking of Arkansas, their only loss of the season so far was in the first game of the season, a 50-10 blowout loss to USC.

The craziest game of the week was Tennessee winning at Georgia, 51-33. After falling behind 24-7 early, Tennesse turned up its offense, defense and speacial teams on their way to 44 points in the final three quarters. With the exception of a near-disaster against Air Force, Tennessee has looked very good so far. Michigan had yet another impressive win over rival Michigan State, but the bad news for them is that sophomore star Mario Manningham is rumored to have an injured knee. Michigan’s coach Lloyd Carr is not saying anyhthing about the injury so far, so it’s not known just how serious it is. Manningam is the guy that’s taken the Wolverine offense to the next level this year and may have been mentioned with Troy Smith in the Big Ten MVP race.

The other team I wanted to mention, once again, is California. In what’s becoming an impressive habit the Golden Bears destroyed another decent opponent; his time it was previous #12 Oregon. Cal got out to a 28-7 first half lead and won going away. With Tennessee turning it up and showing how good they are I don’t have any problem putting Cal in this weeks top 10.

Looking ahead to next week, there aren’t nearly as many good games on the slate nationally. The biggest, and only game between ranked team, is #2 Florida at #11 Auburn. The Tigers don’t have to wait very long to try and get some respect back after their loss to Arkansas. The other big game of course is our Minnesota Gophers at the Wisconsin Badgers. I’ll have a full preview coming up in a couple days, but the early glace doesn’t look too favorable for Minnesota. Wisconsin, behind freshman running back PJ Hill, has become one of the better rushing teams in the nation. The Gophers are one of the worst teams in the NCAA in stopping the run. In addition, the Gophers haven’t come with 2 TD’s of beating Wisconsin in Madison since the Jim Wacker coached 1994 team went in there and won their only Big Ten game of that season.
