By the Numbers: Gophers Start Fleck Tenure With Win

The start of the P.J. Fleck era in Minnesota didn’t go exactly as planned, but the Gophers found a way to get the 17-7 victory over Buffalo. Despite a tighter score than expected, Fleck was happy to start his tenure off with a victory.

“We are going to enjoy it tonight,” said Fleck. “I’ve learned in my short career you never not enjoy a win.”

BY THE NUMBERS

141 Yards receiving for sophomore wide receiver Tyler Johnson; a career high. The Minneapolis native finished with six receptions, including a 61-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

“His work ethic is phenomenal,” said Fleck of Johnson. “I think he could start to see himself in that role. Now he’s got to continue to get better because we need to make some more plays.”

1 Very full box score for Antoine Winfield. The sophomore had seven tackles, one for a loss, two pass breakups and a blocked field goal attempt.

“He’s just a heck of a ball player,” said Fleck. “He loves football. When you have a championship football team, across the board, everybody loves football. That kid loves football and you can tell by the way he plays the game. Gosh, is he special. And he’s also a very humble kid.”

33 Percent on red zone conversions for the Gophers. When Fleck talked postgame about things they have to improve, this is certainly one of those areas.

10,000 The approximate number of students at Thursday’s game. It was packed to the very top, and Fleck took notice.

“I was really proud of our student body,” said Fleck. “When I heard “Row The Boat” being chanted by them, and that’ll fluctuate with wins and losses. They’ll want to throw me out someday, I’ve had that. I will say this. The atmosphere walking in there, our student body going nuts, the lights, the atmosphere, the Big Ten feel…I’m proud of our fans. I really am. That’s what I’ll remember.”

20 Tackles for Buffalo linebacker Khalil Hodge. Now that’s trying to live up to the Khalil name at linebacker for the Bulls.

51 Rushing yards for Buffalo on the night. The Gophers defense allowed just 2.3 yards per attempt.

6 Catches for true freshman Demetrius Douglas who looked solid in his first college action.

100 Winning percentage for P.J. Fleck as a Gopher. While that won’t last forever, Fleck said it well; “You never not enjoy a win.”
