Kaler or Coyle needs to call a press conference — can we please stop with the issuing of statements — and inform the public that because of the current circumstances the Gophers will not be participating in the bowl game. Officials from the Holiday Bowl reportedly already have Northern Illinois lined up to replace Minnesota and that’s exactly what should happen. (Honestly, Holiday Bowl officials should pull the plug themselves.)

Would this be embarrassing? Sure. But the university once again finds itself featured on shows on ESPN and other sports outlets for all the wrong reasons. Would it cause financial hurt? I’m sure it would but that’s a price the university should be willing to pay.

We’re talking about a school that already has been embarrassed by former athletic director Norwood Teague, who resigned in August 2015 after facing sexual harassment charges, and had the release of a sexually explicit video of three basketball players last winter result in suspensions.

By negotiating with the football players, Kaler and Coyle are putting themselves in a position to either beg them to play or threaten to pull all of their scholarships and end up with a team of walk-ons next season. Neither is a good solution.

By bowing out of the game, the university would be eliminating any immediate leverage of a team that is refusing to take part in any football activities as a way to protest the 10 suspensions.
