per Judd:

Coyle has a more difficult job than either Thibodeau or Boudreau. Both of those gentlemen are charged with getting a single team to win games. Coyle steps into a situation where the non-revenue sports seem to be in fine shape, but the three biggest revenue-generators for men’s sports have issues.

The football program continues to work through the coaching transition from Jerry Kill to Tracy Claeys, who has a $4.5 million contract that runs for only three years and contains a buyout of $250,000 per year, meaning that if Coyle wants to bounce him after next season it would cost a very reasonable $500,000.

Richard Pitino’s basketball program is such a mess right now that if we start writing about all its issue there would be no stopping. Men’s hockey coach Don Lucia has only one season left on his contract, meaning that Lucia’s future will have to be one of the first situations addressed by Coyle.

Just where is the danger? Even if he doesn't do well here, what actual harm results from thinking he will?

When it comes to running anything, set the goal. When it comes to Hockey at Minnesota, nothing less than a National Championship. When it comes to Basketball its a Big 10 Championship. And Football Win the West and get into the Championship hunt. He should make these crystal clear to the Coaches. And get from them anything they need to get the job done. And on a separate track he should be compiling candidates to replace any coach who he feels or demonstrates an unwillingness or inability. It is not dangerous, it was simply stated by Al Davis, "Just Win, Baby!"

Or just get rid of coaches who spend $300K on private jets and produce zero results. No need to set a goal there - just clean house.

It's not the expense. It's the return on investment that is the issue. I guess he did bring in a decent class though...

Just STFU! We get it, you don't like Pitino, now just give it a rest.

If I understand correctly, the expense was over budget. In my job that is an issue.

Adding to your comments here, and in another thread, a quote from Chip Scoggins article says the following:

““When I was an employee under Coyle, I never felt like I was an employee, I felt like I was a resource,” he said. “He was great at giving me the tools that I need to succeed without over-managing."-Shane Sandersfeld

I think he will get the needed resources.

Which was approved by his boss according to the article. Which in most jobs,, is not on the requestee

Makes one wonder if he asked for the travel money in stacks of 100s, for "recruiting purposes". He can't recall some of the trips, hmm wierd. Isn't that how the great ones do it? He did learn something from Dad after all.

What Pitino is budgeted in his contract is what the minimum the University allows him to use. He hit that mark, asked for more, and got more thru approval from his boss. Anyone thinking he did anything wrong is an idiot

It's obviously not the plane expenses or the hotel or party or car costs. It's a classic death by 1000 cuts.

Think of your wife when you first met. Then think about 10 years later when she's snoring in bed, spending all your money, and letting her figure go. Little things start to irritate.

My advice to Pitino Jr. would be take the King Air 200 instead of the Global Express on some of his jaunts to show some humility. Realize that many people, like boosters and you know, most people, know the value of a dollar.

I'm afraid he's passed the point of no return. He's toxic and a joke. I'll be surprised if he finishes the season.

Yep. If the basketball team gets snowed in in Ann Arbor, they stay an extra day. They just went above their travel budget. Happens all the time. You move money from part of the budget to the other. The athletic department doesn't run deficits.

In your job, is getting something approved by your boss before you do it an issue? Because that's what happened here. If you don't like Pitino, fine, but pick your battles. This is a complete non issue and any objective minded person would agree.

I'm outraged by it.
BTW - you are late to the party. I have already been corrected on this and topic. I missed that little fact.

Not surprised I missed that, I've ignored most discussion on this topic as it's so unbelievably ridiculous. Par for the course for the Strib though.

Boss pre-approved not an issue where I work...happens fairly often. Granted going 3 times over is a bit much.

Thank you for your opinion, it may be the single most ridiculous comparison I have ever read. If your boss gives you the okay on an expense, you take.

I sure would like a report on the revenue side of this story. If an item is well over budget, it usually means there was extra revenue that was brought in that also wasn't budgeted for. Or, maybe the basketball program saves a great deal of money on another line item expense. This is such shoddy reporting and a direct attack on Pitino. There may be good reason to let Pitino go, but this topic is not even a blip on the radar.

You're spoofin me.

I am looking forward to him treating our basketball coach like he treated Calipari. [emoji459]

If you don't think this is a public relations issue for Joe Sixpack that's fine. Like I said, it is a drop in the bucket but it adds to the gestalt of his public image: an overprivileged and underequipped young coach that has failed to manage his roster or keep his team out of trouble.

The team obviously has no respect for Pitino. Rumor was a player was kicked off for lipping him in practice? When a leader has this many issues in the military they are replaced. Additionally, many fans have no respect for Pitino, the President and the AD have vey recently failed to give even token votes of confidence. He lost some ugly games on the way to a historically bad season. He was never qualified to coach at this level.

If Teague hadn't signed off there is little doubt he would be gone. If his vaunted recruits pan out, and let us pray they do, there is a sliver of chance he will survive but I think it is low probability.
